Thousands of flights canceled as major winter storm bears down> More than 8,000 flights across the U.S. set to take off over the weekend have been canceled as a major storm expected to wreak havoc across much of the country bears down, threatening to knock out power for days and snarl major roadways.> Roughly 140 million people were under a winter storm warning from New Mexico to New England. The National Weather Service forecast warns of widespread heavy #snow and a band of catastrophic ice stretching from east Texas to North Carolina.> Forecasters say damage, especially in areas pounded by ice, could rival that of a hurricane.> By Friday night, the edge of the storm was sending freezing rain and sleet into parts of Texas while snow and sleet were falling in Oklahoma. After sweeping through the South, the storm was expected to move into the Northeast, dumping about a foot (30 centimeters) of snow from Washington through New York and Boston, the weather service predicted. https://apnews.com/article/storm-texas-oklahoma-ice-snow-a94c9d155615333a50e174a4d7d54fc1 #weather #storm

Hello, #brisbane Michael Berkman MP (my MP!) says:"If you lost power for more than 18 consecutive hours, you’re eligible for a $150 rebate through Energex’s Guaranteed Service Level payments. The rebate is usually applied automatically, but you can also submit a claim form here: https://www.energex.com.au/contact-us/forms/gsl-claim-form ... There's been some confusing communication from Energex on compensation, but I can confirm that those affected by Sunday's storms are eligible for the $150 rebate."Our power was off 58 hours. I think Energex is quite clear that it doesn't cover storms, personally, but the form is two minutes to fill in if you have a recent electricity bill handy, so worthwhile. They can’t say no to an MP, I guess. Pass it on!
