there is not yet. All costs are covered by the @EUCommission @fediversity project for now, so don't worry about it right now.

@koen @fediversity How did you implement approvals? I can't find that anywhere in my instance settings? Or maybe it's there but won't allow listing in the directory if I enable it ..?
There is a team of about 5 people that checks the new submissions for a few things:
1. is this a real human
2. is this not an organization
3. does this person not impersonate anyoneIf the answer to those questions is yes the account is approved.
The rest of the moderation is based on people reporting to us that something is not according to the rules, after which we will check if that is so and take appropriate action.

@fediversity project in collaboration with @dansup who also supplies the pixelfed.com domainname. -
@koen @fediversity wanted to sign up and it threw me out because at the end it tells me my user name is invalid. Tja. I don't want to go through all that sign up again. It is not user friendly, if you are not showing at once, when a form field input is not valid.

@koen @fediversity doesn't the .com TLD mean a bit of a vulnerability to US control?
Indeed the .tld domain was not our first choice. But is is very short and @dansup had it available, so we chose to use it.
We might start some more 'themed' pixelfed servers as part of the @fediversity project with the .eu domainname, but at least you can now try out pixelfed.com while your data is being governed by a Dutch foundation that has Privacy and democratic values at the core of it's existance.

@koen no need to do it in private: just do the checking process for every field when one jumps to the next field. So people see at once, oh, my name as a character in it, that isn't allowed, like mine: energisch_ - it isn't allowed according to those rules to have a special character at the end of the name.
What happened: I filled out all forms, added my lengthy reason for joining and wanted to submit the form. Then the error message came. When I wanted to go back to change my name

Fair enough, I think, however then did the emphasis should be still on creating a broad spectrum of what I prefer to call communities rather than servers.
Itâs more human. The foremost focus should be on distributed in the fediverse

Does the Pixelfed software protect user privacy? Does it encrypt user data? Is private messaging, if this is a feature, end to end encrypted?
The Pixelfed software is an 'outward bound' service. It is meant for 'public facing' expression with pictures.
The software does it's best to protect your privacy in a sense that your e-mail address is not publicly viewable.
There is no private messaging, Pixelfed is not a messaging server, we recommend #Matrix for that, which is end to end encrypted.

Het is .com omdat Daniel die beschikbaar had.Zoals ik in een van de andere vragen in dit draadje al typte: er komen misschien nog meer thema based servers bij, die krijgen dan waarschijnlijk een .eu domeinnnaam.

Fixing Sony and Philipsâ Doomed CD-i Console
Although not intended to be a game console, the CD-i would see a a couple of games released for it that would cement its position in gaming history as the butt of countless jokes, some of which still make Nintendo upset to this day. That aside, itâs still a fascinating glimpse at the CD-based multimedia future envisioned in the early 90s, starting with its release in 1990. Recently [MattKC] decided to purchase another CD-i in a fit of nostalgic rage, and repair it to show the world what the future could have been like.
Although Sony and Philips co-developed the device, Sony would go on to release the PlayStation a few years later, which made the CD-iâs life and expectations for it that much harder, leading to it slowly fading into history. The Magnavox one that [MattKC] got is one of the later models, based on the CD-i 450 that was introduced in 1994 as one of the more gaming-oriented models.
As is typical with older devices that use optical media, it would not read discs. It also would sometimes boot up with a âMemory Fullâ error. This is a common fault due to the built-in battery having run out, erasing RAM-stored values and causing random glitches like this when garbage values were read in on boot.
Of course, there cannot be simply a removable battery on the mainboard. Instead it uses one of those integrated battery-RAM units, specifically an ST Timekeeper device.
These use an internal lithium battery which will inevitably run out after the guaranteed ten-year accumulated memory retention period, after which itâs just typical volatile memory. The solution here is to either replace the entire module, or the more appropriate method of chopping it open and wiring up an external CR2032 coin cell that can be easily replaced.
Ultimately this is what [MattKC] opted for, taking a Dremel to the Timekeeper chip and chopping off the top half. There are open replacements for the top half that contain the crystal and the CR2032 cell holder, which makes it into very clean-looking mod, and makes replacing the lithium cell in the future a snap. Of course, this didnât fix the CD player.
The CDM 12.1 CD player mechanism is a standard module that Philips used throughout its consumer electronics, and is known for failing. Funnily enough, this time it wasnât the laser module that had failed, but rather a stuck turntable. A bit of prodding helped to loosen it and the mechanism could read CDs just fine again.
While not a popular series of devices in their day, the CD-i actually has a thriving community around it today, featuring countless mods and hacks to make these devices do things never imagined in the 90s. Theyâre also quite easy to hack, and relatively affordable. Plus you get to play all the amazing Nintendo titles on the CD-i on the real hardware.

@nina_kali_nina valve has been fond of touch pads with subtle haptics in their controllers, and I've been wondering how far they'll be able to push that technology. I doubt they're anywhere near to being useful for braille yet, but it makes me think that cheap mass produced haptic elements could probably be used for something.

@nina_kali_nina a small bit of good news for people in the US with moderate hearing loss is our laws have been updated recently to allow the sale of hearing aids without requiring an expensive prescription or an audiologist. this has greatly brought down the cost. (I assume the ones rated for severe hearing loss that you need a prescription for are probably still absurdly expensive though)

@nina_kali_nina surely, millions of people will be using hearing aids, and millions of people will have braille displays, thus economies of scale must exist. Those prices make me think of prices of medications like insulin which cost almost nothing to make and are sold for astronomical mark-ups. We absolutely can do better.
