Made the mistake of looking at real estate in Georgia (US) last night. Entire mansions, with a porch and all, in forests, just above Atlanta, for the price of a studio in Amsterdam.
Maybe some day when Trump is out.

@Gina If 1 hour 20 mins is "just above", then I'd posit that you can find a lot of nice houses for a similar price in a similar range around major European cities..

I wish we had this style of houses in Europe as well (besides cold ass Norway and Sweden).
Plus, more forests in southern Europe.

@Gina 6 months of 40C and 100% humidity - no thanks.

@pettter I mean, isn't 1,5 hr like a trip to the grocery store for most Americans?
-
@fedops Fair, but right now I live in 5C and 100% humidity. Also not ideal.

@Gina for the same price you could get this amazing fixer-upper in Den Helder, which is much easier to get to than rural Georgia and way more liveable. https://www.funda.nl/detail/koop/den-helder/huis-jan-in-t-veltstraat-94/89426097/

@th The way I would turn my entire living room into a climbing hall

@Gina
It's not "cold ass", it's "tropically challenged"...And most of Sweden is nothing but forest and lakes. That's half the reason I left.

@Gina USA is the best place to live if you fulfill 2 things. Be white, be rich.

@MisterMaker One down, two to go. 🥲
Edit: given the current circumstances around womens reproductive rights I'd add "be a man" to the list as well.

@Gina God no. Those are generally known as "cardboard houses". Note how thin the walls are. Minimal insulation. Relatively cheap and fast to build though.
Northern Europe has real log (beam) houses, which are nothing like that cardboard house, although you think they look similar?
Plenty here in Lithuania waiting for someone to restore them. And some forest still standing here and there
One modern, cost-effective alternative are wood framed, straw bale filled houses, which offer good insulation.

@Gina Those things only affect you if you are poor.

@yngmar yeah but think of how hilarious it is when you one day decide to knock down a wall and you can just do it with.. your bare hands.

@MisterMaker Good point.
