Bluesky Reveals Massive Hidden Investment
Today #Bluesky revealed that in April 2025 they received a whopping $100M venture capital investment and that they KEPT IT A SECRET.
https://bsky.social/about/blog/03-19-2026-series-b
So the answer to the big mystery Who Owns Bluesky? (https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/116025246450023071) is finally out.
Now, we should be asking why did this company that prides itself on transparency and "decentralization" decide they needed to hide who owned the company?
I hate to use the word cuck, but people never learn. They will run straight for the next vulture capital financed illusion of a town square and get their faces eaten off yet once more

@mastodonmigration Hang on, liberals and progressives use BlueSky? Clout chasing is a drug.
@patmikemid Its not just clout chasing. Many people today are open that they have careers in culture because they got on Twitter early and networked there. I think that was and is bad ethics and bad tactics but many of them make more money and get more recognition than I do and the conventional ways of making a living in those fields have dried up too.

@mastodonmigration Ah, Bain. The stories we could tell.
Anyway, just need Mike Masnick to tell us why this is good actually.
@tehstu @mastodonmigration It will be good because as a member of the board he will stand to gain financially from this if there is any kind of exit. He will of course stay the course to “advocate for open social networks” but tragically his attempts will fall on deaf ears. Perhaps a book will result afterward.

@mastodonmigration this was never a secret to begin with.

People never thank you for warning them and admit they made a mistake not listening to you in the first place. Instead they get incandescently angry at the slightest hint of, "I told you so," or – if you say nothing – either double down and refuse to acknowledge any error or start claiming they always knew, depending on how stubborn they are.
@jackwilliambell @mastodonmigration @samiamsam So don't say I told you so, even if it is justified. Be a good person, keep your head cool, keep warning people, even if the result is anger.

@mastodonmigration Lol, it's called capitalism. No big company is a "good guy".

@mastodonmigration It's normal to delay announcing funding rounds like this. This is a nothingburger.

Are they talking about it over there or just meh
@mastodonmigration maybe the techies are but not much from ordinary users
-
@duncan_bayne @nazokiyoubinbou @mastodonmigration Right, but MacOS never pretended to be open or an alternative to the things people were fleeing from Microsoft. Ubuntu is the analogy because it rides on the story of Linux as liberating, but with capitalism.
@dalias @duncan_bayne @mastodonmigration Apple does kind of pretend at openness. Oh they don't pretend to be FLOSS of course, but they created a walled garden and trick people into thinking it's wide open — right up until someone finds out they can't log into their account because of a bad gift card and everything they had in there is inaccessible...
Ubuntu actually is pretty open for all that it's so corporate. The fact Mint could be built on it kind of says they haven't really fully reached the Bluesky level of centralization and closedness.
Well, perhaps there isn't really an ideal metaphor, but the way people put Apple up on that pedestal as the perfect alternative really makes me feel like it comes darned close.

It certainly is not. Have never seen it before. Name another example.

@mastodonmigration The average delay from getting funding and announcing it is about 3 months. It's completely normal. This is just how venture capital works.

Nonsense. Saying it does not make it so. It is simply not true. Plus, we are talking about a year, and particularly with an investment of this magnitude.

To understand all this better, consider that the Crypto PAC 'Fairshake' spend over $20M in Illinois and $10M of that on a failed attempt to defeat Julianna Stratton. They have over $220M more to spend on influencing the midterms. For these guys the opportunity to achieve some degree of message control over liberal social media is well worth $100M.
How will they do it? Algorithmic manipulation of social media? Quieting critics, amplifying favorable messaging? Has it already begun?
The implausible excuse now coming from Bluesky PBC officers as to why they failed to disclose this $100M is that the were "too busy."

@mastodonmigration If they expect anyone to accept that, it just demonstrates the absolute contempt they have for their users. Amazing.
On the other hand, it was well known from Day One what BS was. Maybe the people using it are the sort that WANT to be treated that way.

There is certainly something psychologically binding about parroting something you know to be untrue out of fealty. Explains a lot of society actually.
