But, he is clearly guilty of at least cultural genocide. His complicity in the residential school system is directly responsible for generations of suffering by indigenous people. No remembrance of Macdonald should ignore these crimes against humanity.

I'm going to say Yes, But.
Yes, MacDonald is one of the most important figures in Canadian history. It's clear that without him, Canada would not have anything close to its present borders -- probably not the far North, BC, or the Prairie provinces. Whether a smaller Canada made up of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes would have survived intact to the present day is not certain (although impossible to test).
