I also think that the moment does not call for cynicism, but for action. Anyone can predict failure; if you do it hard enough, it may be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Hope with action may actually save lives.

I've spent 5-6 years studying it.
Now it's been a while I've stopped and almost forgot everything.
But a possible solution is not to study kanjis in isolation but in context, to learn their pronunciation matching the rest of the sentence.- 水を飲む --> mizu
- 今日は水曜日 --> suiAnd so on.
My son (almost 10yo) is studying it like that, on his Japanese school books.
And he already knows more than 200 kanjis...
