@stux is IRC really relevant as a chat solution?
(yes, I know there are many servers, and people still use it. and I'm happy for those users) but from what I can tell it's just a very old protocol that people who are used to Discord won't be satisified with both from a feature standpoint and a moderation standpoint.

HTTP is also a really old protocol, but it's still used everywhere and still evolving. IRC lost momentum at some point, but it definitely has potential because of it's flexibility and simplicity. There is no other chat protocol or chat platform currently which can morph as much as IRC. It's not perfect and it's specification can be confusing, but I still believe it's the best option we have currently.

I've setup a (public) #IRC server on my personal Yuno server at
https://net.stux.me with a web client on https://irc.stux.me
It's super small and a little test.. If enough people are interested I /could/ setup something bigger for long term
I don't wanna make extra costs so it has to be worth it
@stux I run a teamspeak server for my friends.
Although they are pushing for an account it isn't a requirement. For those discord user maybe a more familiar switch. -
@thibaultmol To be honest, I don't know
There are no working iOS app for one so..
@stux @thibaultmol I’m using a weechat setup for my servers. A little LXC container on my home server allows me to connect from a web interface. The home server is on 24/7 so I have a bouncer for all the messages. WeechatRN is a great iOS app for that.
But to be fair. Not the kind of technology that you are used to. Thinking about setting up a synapse server again for a better chat experience. -

@stux I just found out that Ventrilo, of all things, is still around. I feel old. But it's old enough that things like AI and age verification just won't be doable with it's codebase.

@stux wow, IRC !!! I was on there 20+ years ago 😆👍 I remember at the time I loaded a jpilot applet on my Geocities website which connected to my rooms on mircx and DALnet 😄

@stux Isn't Matrix the go-to Discord alternative in the Fediverse? I haven't used it, but I see it mentioned occasionally...

@stux Zulip! I still want to see/experience it used "in anger". Though, from small tests with a couple of acquaintances, many people are not compatible with how it works 🤷

@stux in my humble opinion discord is seeing mass use not because of lack of IRC servers but because IRC objectively sucks compared to discord. And I'm saying that as an avid IRC user sice its heyday. The absolute worst part of IRC are the IRC clients. They are atrocious both on mobile and on desktop.

@stux IRC is already severely lacking in features but the IRC clients don't usually support even the existing limited featureset...

It's been a while I see communities leaving dinosaur IRC for Matrix.
Why not this or XMPP (with Monal, ConversationsIM, Snikket or Quicksy)?

@stux I'd say host a Matrix server for your community instead. Disable federation if you're concerned with server resources. Disable encryption by default if you're concerned with non-savvy users that will regularly lose their history. Savvy users will enable it anyway.
