@dansup @kdekooter smurf or furry avatars when
@dansup @kdekooter i actually did a test of ultra lowband video conferencing with simple face replacement but the resulting video file was so well optimized it hit the "minimum file size limit" in loops so i couldnt paste it

@dansup Is this 100% offline filters or is this using a server somewhere?
@Dequei great question, this is in fact 100% offline and uses system (Metal on iOS) APIs to handle real time preview and rendering.

@dansup Is this more important than the new UI?

@sturmsucht This is the last remaining milestone for the Loops grant that expires on March 1st, so I'd say yes.

@dansup thanks for the transparency

@dansup Would be awesome if there was a way to make the AR filters modular, there could be a plugin ecosystem for devs to make their own filters for Loops!

@baralheia Yes, that is my plan!

@dansup Brilliant use of programmers' time. The really important stuff.

@Cenbe @dansup well, it is.
As a part of the NLnet foundation grant for Loops, work on AR filters is a milestone to be reached by March (I think it's March). So I'd say that's pretty important.And it's just a fun feature. Fun features that users will like are definitely a good use of the developers time (even apart from being required by the grant), wouldn't you say?

@kdekooter People like them?
@dansup Uninformed people all over the world may like to vote for fascists. Should we do it anyway?
Yes, it's a bad comparison. But in my opinion, it illustrates well why you shouldn't do everything that people like.

@kdekooter@moralapostel @dansup @kdekooter Are AR filters harmful by any mean (directly or not)? This is a real question

@anatolegc Yes, in my opinion it does. It copies "trends" from addictive platforms. The Fediverse should strictly refuse to do this. What comes next? An algorithm?

@dansup @kdekooter@moralapostel @anatolegc @kdekooter How is an AR filter harmful, when you don't need to even finish uploading the video to Loops, you can literally record a video then save it and share it to a specific person outside of Loops.
It's not that different from editing a photo and sharing it. That happens a lot. Where is the harm?

@dansup Why should we engage in the same nonsense as on the platforms we wish to leave behind?

@dansup @moralapostel @anatolegc I'm with @moralapostel here. Besides the feature being stupid, childish and tasteless we as fediverse should refrain from pyschological tricks.

@anatolegc @kdekooter@moralapostel @anatolegc @kdekooter Powerful and popular features shouldn't be proprietary.
They should belong to the people.
You might not use them, does that mean nobody should too? Even if we build an ethical implementation?

Thanks s lot @kdekooter
Your explanation hits the nail on the head.
