Augmented Reality filters are coming to the fediverse, first with Loops and soon Pixelfed!

@dansup @moralapostel @anatolegc Just stating my aesthetical opinion.
@kdekooter @moralapostel @anatolegc I respect that, but can you not see the comparisons to editing a photo before uploading it?
This is just a fun way to add some flair to your video, we only have a few filters like sunglasses and dog ears, I don't see the harm in that.
-
@kdekooter @moralapostel @anatolegc what tricks??
There is literally no difference if you edit a photo to add a filter or overlay text/stickers.
I really don't understand why you are calling this stupid and childish, its just a fun feature, and one that isn't required.
@dansup @kdekooter @moralapostel @anatolegc
AR =/= AI. We've had AR filters as long as Snapchat has existed and it was always done on-device. Without that goofy dog filter I probably wouldn't be with my partner of seven years. Those were simpler times.

@dansup Well, it's an opinion that I'm expressing here. No more, no less. I may have a different aesthetic sensibility, and I also think that trying to copy addictive platforms is not the right way to go. That's how one thing will lead to another in the future... that's my concern.
@kdekooter @anatolegc -
@dansup @moralapostel @anatolegc I'm with @moralapostel here. Besides the feature being stupid, childish and tasteless we as fediverse should refrain from pyschological tricks.
@kdekooter @dansup @moralapostel @anatolegc Viewers should have a toggle to enable or disable AR effects on each video. We need to fight trickery and combat disinformation. Insta-bans for anyone trying to hide their acne!
-
@dansup Uninformed people all over the world may like to vote for fascists. Should we do it anyway?
Yes, it's a bad comparison. But in my opinion, it illustrates well why you shouldn't do everything that people like.
@kdekooter@moralapostel
Well, that escalated quickly. Dansup, you literally Hitler! :D -
@moralapostel

-
@anatolegc Yes, in my opinion it does. It copies "trends" from addictive platforms. The Fediverse should strictly refuse to do this. What comes next? An algorithm?
@dansup @kdekooter@moralapostel
The entire Fediverse consists of copies of addictive platforms minus their addictive and harmful features. I don't see how those AR filters are supposed to be harmful.Thry are stupid and fun. Why not let people have some stupid fun on fediverse? Oh, I'm writing this to someone with the nickname Moralapostel. Never mind. :)

@dansup Brilliant use of programmers' time. The really important stuff.

@ditol @anatolegc Ah, very good. Now comes the distraction from the topic with my chosen profile name. 😋

@kdekooter
Why do you consider them psychological tricks?(I agree on the stupid, childish and tastless part, but this is so extremely subjective that I myself wouldn't care what I say in this regard. People should be allowed to have fun with some stupid, tasteless and childish fun.)

@kdekooter @dansup @moralapostel @anatolegc, what psychological tricks you mean?
Taste is subjective. Let's people enjoy their taste 🥰

@moralapostel
so, how are those filters harmful?@ditol @anatolegc In my opinion, this is the beginning of a slow dumbing down of the Fediverse. The Fediverse should be better than an unreflective continuation of dependency-creating platforms.

As a #MastoAdmin, you highly underestimate the addictivity of the #Fediverse. I hear from the community over a two-minute downtime.
These same folks are also have addictive tendancies to dihydrogen monoxide.

@chad The latter is, after all, essential for survival ;)

Yet, here we are.
Consider that the #fediverse is a third place for many, and allowing as many people as they see fit to interact with their third place only helps address the critical isolation crisis we see in many of our societies today.
You have no business telling others how they should interact with their third place, unless it harms you. A dog filter isn't going to harm you.
If you don't like it, you have very adequate timeline management and blocking tools at your disposal.

@dansup @kdekooter@moralapostel
Dumbing down? I always considered a platform for short posts of less that 500 or even 200 characters as extremely dumb and making users dumber. I was never on Twitter for that reason. And yet somehow Twitter was the preferred platform by people with academic degrees. Mastodon has been doing a limit of under 500 char. for years. The community only decided recently to... dumb up I guess.In short, I see this logic "dumb feature -> makes people dumb", but I have come to accept that things don't always work the way I expect. And this is one of those cases.
At the same time, I have never encountered furries on Mastodon, this subculture I find probably the most stupid ever. But there must be entire communities of furry fans on Mastodon and Pixelfed. And they might know what to do with those filters. And they should be given all tools they find useful, regardless of my opinion nobody ever asked me for anyway.

@chad You have a good point. However, saying "stay out of it, it's none of your business" on a federated platform where the aim is to hear and form opinions is in a class of its own. 😉

That's absolutely not what I said.
Equate this to how people express their identity on the fediverse in other ways. Honestly, if you have an issue with a harmless dog filter, you must have an issue with furries, too.
Two harmless expressions, yet one seems reprehensible to you.

@chad Yes, it's harmless at first. But it won't stop there. I foresee further shitification of the Fediverse. And I would find that very unfortunate.
Thank you for the objective discussion.
