Not going to lie—the Steam Hardware Announcement has been deeply inspirational to me.
For 30 years, people have tried to make desktop Linux a thing. It wasn’t a thing—to the point where “desktop Linux” became a punchline. But today—with one move, the Steam Machine made it real.
For 30 years, people have tried to make VR a thing. It wasn’t a thing—again, a joke to detractors. But today—with one move, the Steam Frame made it real.
Now think about the other technologies that were supposed to change the world but never crossed into the mainstream: home servers, 3D printers, decentralized social media. All of it works—but none of it has hit that tipping point yet.
That last one, decentralized social media, is personal for me. I’ve co-founded a fully managed Fediverse hosting service twice. And I can only hope it doesn’t take another 30 years for it to break through. But with enough persistence and iteration, we’re getting closer every day.
