Six or eight legs good, one hundred legs better!
Wandering in the woods atop the Königstuhl in late afternoon sunshine, I found a rotting tree trunk. Pulling a chunk off revealed this lovely beastie.
It's likely a white-legged snake (or black) millipede (Tachypodoiulus niger).
In German it's the Großer Weißfüßiger Schnurfüßer – just trips off the tongue 😬✌️

#BackGardenEntomology 🪲FWIW, Wikipedia says that it can be hard to make an unambiguous ID of such black millipedes, as there are several species that look the same.
In particular, it cites Cylindroiulus londinensis as being very similar. However, there have been no sightings of the latter in Germany on iNaturalist, whereas T. niger is pretty common in these parts.
So I'm going with that – let's see if experts disagree when I post it on iNaturalist 🤷♂️

#BackGardenEntomology 🪲@markmccaughrean I was fascinated by them as a child! We often found them in dry stone walls hiding under stones from the heat of the day. And as children make it easy, we called them just "Tausendfüßler" (the "l" is important for the dialect in Baden).

@NatureMC Duly noted 🙂 Indeed, searching online, it appears as though most sources call them the Großer Weißbeinige Schnurfüßer, but iNaturalist has Weißfüßiger for some reason.

Also in the North with 'l'.

@markmccaughrean Dialects have a different logic and grammar than Standard High German.
Mine e.g. has Alemannic grammar. -

@markmccaughrean sorry, I was not exact, spent easy less time there in the past few years v The people at Baden are Gelbfüßler.

Mine e.g. has Alemannic grammar.No-one would call them Schnurfüßer but everyone would use Tausendfüßler. Strangely enough. 🙂

@dg3hda I think Heidelberg is officially part of Baden, no? I mean, it's in Baden-Württemberg, and specifically in the part that was Baden from 1803 until 1945, so ...
