@hipsterelectron @mtrc @clayote @shoofle I did a bit of both. It is worth noting that I have an above average ability to visualize things in my head, which might have been in part due to pursuing art all my life and having some formal training as an artist, but that's not something everyone has (and also being able to visualize something accurate relies on having a good enough understanding of the priors involved, though I find that's less of a problem for me than one might expect)
