  • Connector-Free Zone: PCB Edge as USB-C Interfaces

Sometimes when you’re making a PCB that you plan on programming over USB, but you only plan on plugging in a couple of times, it would be nice to make that connection without another BOM item. Over on GitHub [AnasMalas] has released a PCB edge USB-C connection symbol/footprint to do just that!

This isn’t the first PCB edge USB-C connector we’ve seen, but this one has some nice features. It’s available in both KiCad and EasyEDA formats, allowing you to easily add it into your preferred ECAD software. As well as supporting multiple software packages, there are two versions included: a 10-pin and 14-pin version. The 10-pin version has, on each side, 2 USB voltage pins, 2 ground pins, and a CC1 or CC2 pin on its respective side; this version is ideal if you’re looking to just supply power via the connector. The 14-pin version has all the pins of the 10-pin version with the addition of four data-positive and data-negative pins needed to relay information to the board, ideal if you’re planning on programming a microcontroller with this connection.

One important note is that, while most PCBs default to 1.6 mm thickness, if you use this connector you’ll need to drop that down to ~0.8 mm to properly interface with a common USB cable. [AnasMalas] also suggests using ENIG board finish to preserve the connectors on your USB cable.

For such a small and common connector, USB-C holds a ton of potential. Be sure to check out our series all about USB-C for more details.

Thanks to [Ben] for the tip.

Attention #YunoHost users I bring you my #SelfHosting facepalm moment of the day.PSA for you, which may save you some time. Learn from my lesson!I attempted to connect to my VPS (running YunoHost) in Terminal, with SSH. I couldn't get in... the password kept getting rejected. Then I put the VPS in "rescue mode" and generated a new root password. That didn't work either. Then I restored the VPS from yesterday's snapshot. Hetzner emailed me a new password. Which didn't work. Then I remembered: YunoHost disables root access. The only username that works for SSH is YOUR YUNOHOST ADMIN username, gaaaah.End of my PSA I hope this saves you some time πŸ˜…β€‹#MySoCalledSudoLife #CertifiedNewbie

@d1re_w0lf no... someone else I know also had issues with Sharkey... it's the first app packaged by YunoHost that is giving me such a headache. Usually the installation is seamless πŸ˜β€‹

Progress update no.3 (perseverance edition) πŸ’ͺSeveral people suggested that I install #YunoHost on my Raspi5 ON TOP of Debian (thank you @jan and @fmors) so I will be trying that tomorrow morning... when my parents are looking after my little one (who's on a 2 week school holiday). This morning I gave up a little too easily because she was playing nearby and my attention was a little scattered. But excited to try out this method tomorrow. Thank you Jan & Fernando πŸ™β€‹The Fediverse has THE BEST tech support πŸ˜„β€‹

@Gina @rrapio @watchfulcitizen good morning you all! Well, my "secrets" to productivity are:1) accidentally falling asleep at 9:30pm (so that by 5:30am I had already slept 8 hours)2) knowing I can't do much work on a Wednesday because daycare only runs till 12:30pmGiven how long I've already been up and working... and the fact I will be with a little tornado of energy from 12:30pm till 8:30pm, I bet that tonight I will also fall asleep at 9-9:30pm πŸ˜…β€‹πŸ€£β€‹
