Watching Netflix's version of The Three Body Problem (the Chinese one was better)

@robertsmith I couldn't agree more. Recently I discovered the term "cassette futurism", you might be into that too:
@enriquericos Very cool. I love audio cassettes but they degrade fairly fast. Maybe connecting nu tech to an #analogue push button interface is the way to go/an interesting approach.

@artcollisions I forgot how chaotic is trying to find the right platform for each country, so I'll leave that to you, but this is the show:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20242042/?ref_=fn_t_2
And the books are by Cixin Liu, so I assume he wrote them in Chinese, but they're widely translated.
@enriquericos @artcollisions Sorry to hijack the thread, the Chinese one covers just the book or does include something from the rest of the book series?

But these switches are awesome and I'd like to what they're called or if they're custom props. I might want to get them for an art project, a cyberdeck or who knows what.
Any button experts in the room? Please and thank you.

@enriquericos to me it looks like a vintage mechanical calculator or even a cashier till

@ghostdancer @artcollisions I think it's only the first book

@enriquericos Thanks 1.0E6 👍 @artcollisions

@robertsmith I don't miss the degrading audio, or image getting darker on VHS tapes, but I do miss buttons and knobs. I bet that there are lots of Raspberry projects that combine the best of both worlds.
And I didn't know about ESP32, I'll look into it, thank you.

@enriquericos esp32s are kind of like ardunino' on steroids. often esp32s are bundled with a lora rx/tx radio clipsets for use as nodes in meshtastic and meshcore.
Also options for tf storage, touch screens, wifi and ethernet.
And cheap! Fun stuff.

@enriquericos For future reference: In English, it should be "what" they're called, not "how" they're called.
If you asked someone how they're called, the might answer something like "I don't know? On a phone? How else would you call things?"
I see this error very often on the English Learning subreddits. I'm told that it's a literal translation of other languages, who actually use "how" in this case.
-
@AtotheJ I can always make the caps myself. Looking for heavy duty is a good idea, thank you!
@enriquericos @AtotheJ then guitar pedal foot switches could be a good source for them. e.g. https://www.musikding.de/Switches

@AdmiralMemo You're right, it's a literal translation from Spanish. Thanks for pointing it out 🙂

@dimsimple Thank you! I'm watching their explainer videos now.

@robertsmith @bonkers I want EVERYTHING they're selling. Thank you!

@tully Thank you, the caps look artificially weathered to me, so I'm pretty sure you're right 🙂
Or maybe everything is new but customized, I'm seeing similar caps and switches in online shops. -

@enriquericos @bonkers Yeah, I like the NASA style panel with switches. But kind of $$$, be curious if I could build my own? 🤔 #DIY #CNC

@gcvsa @enriquericos
The caps look real to me. I may even have very similar.
Likely they printed the legends. There are many ways of doing that. In 1970s using Letraset. Transfer film & laser printer.The only advantage of optical switches is never wearing out vs 100,000 to 10 million operations for mechanical. Or for combustible atmospheres. The only optical switches I've seen in decades of Electronics are in optical encoders (control knobs and mice wheels), but most of them are mechanical.
@raymaccarthy @enriquericos I used to be the purchasing manager for an artist's materials firm. Letraset and other brands of dry transfer lettering were big business for us, even into the mid-1990s.
And I wouldn't say that's the only advantage to optical switches. There's a definite difference in feel, since they are switching a relay and not actually passing the main circuit's signal.
