La i di ciao serve solo ad indicare che la c precedente è dolce, come la cediglia in francese. (A prescindere dall'etimologia; da questo la trascrizione IPA.)
La connessione “slava” che conoscevo è che la parola SLAVO e SCLAVUS avessero la stessa radice perché a quanto pare un buon numero di schiavi veniva di là.

"ciao" viene da "s'ciao", veneto per schiavo/servo, una cosa come "servo vostro".
Mi pare che "sclavus" -> "sciao" sia proprio un esempio di influenza slava nella pronuncia veneta ma non ricordo abbastanza da dirlo con sicurezza.
