I watch a lot of “alternative” sports leagues.Part of that comes from living in Vancouver. We’ve only got one “big four” franchise: the Vancouver Canucks. So if you’re not in the mood for pro hockey—what do you watch instead? There’s plenty of junior hockey around: the WHL, BCHL, and PJHL. Soon, we’ll even have a women’s pro team playing in the PWHL.Outside the rink, there’s Canadian football (CFL). It’s not as massive as it once was, but it still draws thousands to the stadium every game.Soccer’s thriving too. Between the MLS and CPL, Vancouver’s got two top-tier leagues, plus League1 BC on the pro-am side and the new women’s league, the NSL.Then you’ve got the sports that fly under the radar: lacrosse (NLL and WLA), basketball (CEBL), and single-A baseball (the Vancouver Canadians). And finally, the real outliers—Aussie rules football (BCAFL), rugby (VRU), cricket (GT20), and ultimate (Furious George).I just wish more team sports caught on. A pro volleyball team here would be amazing.
