My BSDCan submission has been approved!

It will be wonderful to be back in Ottawa, meet again all the "old" (and new) friends from the BSD world and, this time, present something that has saved me more than once... and it’s based on NetBSD!

@speedbone @yvan absolutely, and doing it on OpenBSD is great as OpenBSD is probably the best platform for this task.

@speedbone @yvan it is. But officially unsupported, so it will break if you don't repatch it after upgrades.
That said, I'm using it. But the "ro" option on FreeBSD is officially supported.

    stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafeundefined stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe

This morning I turned on the coffee machine and made my espresso.
Then I turned it off and organized the rest of breakfast.
After that, I turned the coffee machine on (hey, it warmed up instantly!) and looked for my favorite cup, but I couldn’t find it.
Weird, I was sure it was in the dishwasher, clean.

Then I looked at the table and saw my lovely hot espresso already waiting for me.

If this is how the week starts, I’m not sure I want to imagine how it’s going to continue 😆

@mms "hey, just run this 1.5k line long shell script that will turn your private computer into something totally managed by a non-deterministic system that could potentially expose all your data to the entire Internet".
    And people do it.
And then tomorrow I'll have a call about "system security" because pf on OpenBSD isn't a certified firewall.
    Life is hard.

  • Moving from Unifi to Mikrotik is quicker and easier then I thought (the buy phase ;) )
    stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafeundefined stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe

@joshaspinall @justdude @justine I'm currently configuring this for my office.
At the moment, I'm managing around 50 #MikroTik devices. They're all doing great.
I have more or less other 50 devices to be delivered or "just in case". They can be off for years - I upgrade them, reset to default settings and they're ready to do their job in a reliable way.
Oh, and I also have a watchdog!

@yvan I'd use OpenBSD or FreeBSD. The good thing is that, if you're using FreeBSD, you can make it read only in a very simple way: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2024/05/31/freebsd-tips-and-tricks-native-ro-rootfs/
