    Flag and Feathers

I took this photo of hundreds of black skimmers sweeping past a prominent building near the docks in Gulfport, Mississippi. I played with the light to create a sky washed in deep orange, leaving the birds and the building softly pale against it.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

Here’s a tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) I managed to catch darting into the upper‑right corner of the frame. The focus slipped a bit as he plunged through the air, but the moment still feels electric. It’s as if he’s charging straight toward the lens with heroic enthusiasm—here he comes to save the day, a tiny tufted titmouse on its way.

Tufted titmice are a favorite among a select group of bird enthusiasts. To celebrate these charming creatures, I’ve curated a special collection dedicated entirely to them in my photo gallery. Take a look!

This female Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) has been around for a while — she probably still is. They show up regularly, usually early in the morning or again around dusk, though I spot them at other times as well.

If you’re captivated by northern cardinals and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

Often I find that photos which aren’t perfectly sharp can be more beautiful than the ones that are. That’s true of this image I took in Georgia, USA, of a great egret (Ardea alba) standing alone in a pond. The slight softness gives it a timeless, almost bygone elegance.

This is an American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis). I photographed this particular bird several years ago.

This chubby little sanderling (Calidris alba) caught my eye at Gulfport, Mississippi—plump, poised, and perfectly beachbound.

    Sparrow in a Pine Tree

This is a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina), which I suspect has the largest population around here at the moment — though the goldfinches might have them beat. Hard to say for sure. There’s no official count, just what the eyes and ears suggest.

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

    Hills and Problems

When you set out walking, you inevitably come to hills. You climb one, no big deal—but sure enough, there’s always another waiting on the other side.

    That’s life.

We face problems. Some loom larger than others, demanding our attention. We fixate on the one that feels most urgent, believing that solving it will lift a great weight off our shoulders. And it does—briefly. But that’s the thing about problems: solve one, and another steps up to take its place. It’s like reaching the top of a hill only to find another rising beyond it.

    So what do you do?

You keep walking. You face the next hill. The world doesn’t pause for our troubles—we all carry them. It’s just that our own burdens often feel heavier than they truly are. So take a breath. It’s not the end of the world.

Remember how you felt when you were young. We had problems then too, but somehow we were better at keeping them in their place. We compartmentalized. Our troubles stayed in their box while joy, curiosity, and play lived in others. We dealt with what needed dealing, then moved on. We didn’t let worry steal every moment.

Learn to do that again. Learn to stop worrying.

“Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.” — Steve Maraboli

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill

“We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” — Joseph Campbell

    Good morning. 🍊🍊🍊

    3 October 2025

I had a plumber come in yesterday to unstop our kitchen sink. He was a nice enough young man and did a good job, but the cost to get him to snake out the drain gave me sticker shock. It was nearly twice what it was the last time I called them. I imagined being told in an Eastern European accent "the price is the price." The plumbing company is the one I normally call, but the next time I need the sink unplugged I might consider calling somebody else, or not I'll have to wait and see how I feel at the time.

We're supposed to walk this morning but I'm again getting a late start. We may just do a few laps around the property today. One lap is roughly a quarter mile so I can get a little exercise in that way and Charlie stays off the leash when we stay here so he can run and jump or just get inquisitive about all of the surrounding scents. I'll need to dig out my waterproof hiking shoes; there is dew in the morning.

After that, I may tend to the bird feeders, because they don't tend to themselves. I get to feeling a little bad when I look out and there are birds just hanging around empty feeders while staring at the backdoor. You'd think that I'm exaggerating, which I may be, but it sure seems like that's what they do.

“The price is the price.” — Taken (film, 2008) — sovereign utterance from the Ministry of Unyielding Transactions

“But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world.” — E.B. White

“Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.” — Henry David Thoreau
