miriamrobern@dice.camp I have an answer for this that is rather technical in nature, as to why this isn't possible today.
... but sometimes people just want to express frustration and don't want to hear reasons, so let me know if you'd like to hear it.

miriamrobern@dice.camp the reason is two-fold:
- There is no standardized way to communicate "mutuals" as a group between instances. Comparatively, there is one for "public".
- You cannot easily tell whether your mutuals are the same as another server's list of mutuals, so there's a reliability guarantee that is hard to satisfy.
These are solvable problems, but sadly it isn't as low hanging as it initially seems 😅

Yeah, it's frustrating -- people have been asking for this since forever (well 2018 but close enough .There are some interesting perspectives from Claire on the challenges of adding this to Mastodon in a Github discussion in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/7135#issuecomment-636767048

@jansenspott @mthie ich will mich nicht aus der Affäre ziehen, aber alles was wir mit dem Plugin machen ist: wir schicken eine Überschrift, eine summary, den content mit inline images und die Images nochmal als attachment. Dadurch kann jedes empfangende Netzwerk entscheiden was es am besten anzeigen. Ich schau mir das aber gerne im neuen Jahr nochmal an. Vielleicht finden wir ja mit den gotosocial devs eine schöne Lösung!

@jansenspott @mthie es ist leider ein großes Problem, dass verschiedene Platform sehr unterschiedlich mit content umgehen. Mastodon nutzt die summary beispielsweise nicht mehr generell für die content warning (nur wenn zusätzlich noch ein flag gesetzt ist). Wenn wir jetzt den Output für gotosocial anpassen kommen bugs von Friendica Nutzern die den vollen content nicht mehr lesen können.

@dragospirvu75 @matrix @delta @lazarus The way to achieve interoperability is to stop reinventing the wheel and agree on one standard. Implementing three protocols is completely unfeasible and unnecessary. This worked 20 years ago with MSN, ICQ and AIM when IM protocols had a lot less features and no E2EE. Doesn’t work today.

@matrix @delta @lazarus @daniel Every protocol/standard/client has their own pros and cons. The real enemies are centralized and proprietary systems. What people really need is XMPP/Matrix/Delta interoperability.

@mthie Meines Wissens nach wird da gar nichts zwischen den Instanzen ausgetauscht. Jede bekommt für sich eine Info über den neuen Beitrag. Und je nach System werden dann die Inhalte angezeigt. Ich bin da echt überfragt, wie und ob ich das beeinflussen kann. So ist es aber nicht schön, da hast Du wohl recht. @pfefferle
