I joined a couple days back, because I wanted to follow some of the FOSS projects and their authors. While that is a success, I'm still drowning in politics and internal shenanigans.

For somebody who was very much insulated from social networks, for at least a couple of years now, it's dreading.

For example, people screaming # mansplaining under seemingly any comment breaks my brain. If somebody wants to explain this to me: I'm open =)

Filters are your friend. There's lots of ways to block out the stuff you're not keen on. Shout if you want some pointers - otherwise welcome. 😊

@PaulaToThePeople Joined the Fediverse because Twitter/X broke its API so that third-party clients couldn't function properly. These clients made my experience accessible to the visually impaired. Breaking that meant I needed a new home.

@PaulaToThePeople I deleted instagram, because I was sick of Meta, advertisements, and being hypnotised by reels for hours. I wanted control over my feed and genuine interaction. Like tumblr in 2012, which was my only good social media experience prior to fedi.

Thank you for advice, I will definitely try filters out. And if it doesn't work for me, I guess just no using a "Trending" page is also always an option.

Then I probably like "not using Trending page" more 🙂

I tried putting a couple words into filter, and it wasn't effective.
And curating long list of things, about which I specifically don't want to hear sounds like a very special form of self torture, and in the very least would take a tall on mental health.

How is your experience here so far?
Do third party apps compare to what existed for Twitter? Are people writing enough AltText and also keep their posts otherwise accessible?

@PaulaToThePeople Oh my goodness the alt text is beautiful. Being honest, if there were images I couldn't interact with, I would just skip on by and not feel particularly left out, I wouldn't care. I didn't know what I was missing, but now, being able to interact with images, understand them, makes me share them, makes me feel more a part. I particularly love the nature images. The effort and detail people put into describing them means a lot to me.

@PaulaToThePeople And, yes, third party apps are pretty good here. There are things mine can't do, like make polls and some other stuff. I wish I could see who other people are following and who their friends are like I could on Twitter. I wish I could see their favourites, but, all in all, it's pretty good.
