  • @tris Soatak is an expert in cryptography. I’m not. I’m more than happy to stand on the shoulder of giants when it comes to E2EE. That’s why we used the Signal Protocol 10+ years ago for and are now looking towards . However, good, interoperable protocol design is so much more than just E2EE. And maybe I've learned a thing or two about protocol design in my career that they don’t necessarily know.

  • @tris there are three actively developed protocols for federated instant messaging (XMPP, Matrix, Deltachat). At least one of them is very open to new developers and new ideas and has a structure in place to collaboratively work on those ideas and bring various stake holders together. With no disrespect to that individual I don't see why there needs to be a forth protocol loosely based on ActivityPub.

  • @daniel Ah, fair, their work for E2EE Fedi looks interesting: https://github.com/fedi-e2ee/public-key-directory-specification

  • @tris two things: I already said in my follow up post that if someone wants to build their own clients on top of XMPP and prefers MLS over OMEMO, the XMPP community is very open to that. A protocol is much more than just the encryption. They would still benefit from all the other things XMPP has solved.

A lot of what's in that blog post is ill-informed and bordering on disinformation and fear mongering.

  • @daniel Someone have to solve https://soatok.blog/2024/08/04/against-xmppomemo/ issues first

  • @dragospirvu75 @matrix @delta @lazarus The way to achieve interoperability is to stop reinventing the wheel and agree on one standard. Implementing three protocols is completely unfeasible and unnecessary. This worked 20 years ago with MSN, ICQ and AIM when IM protocols had a lot less features and no E2EE. Doesn’t work today.

I'm against banning social media for under 16's. Just outright banning doesn't make something unavailable - just unregulated and not monitored. Alcohol and vapes are still common among under 16's - especial those that are vulnerable. I am for under 16's not being allowed on corporate socials though - as they are toxic places which do provably screw with brain development in youth - because of that algorithmic nature. I am considering pitching an idea to a local established non-profit that I sometimes work with, who run a number of local youth clubs across the region. It is an idea of setting up a fediverse instance for 11-15 year olds. An account can only be made in person alongside being a member of a youth club -with parent / guardian consent. It will not be federated to the general social web, and begin as a self-contained bubble - but with the idea of other regions creating the same thing and federating together. It would be moderated by the same volunteers / employees that run the youth clubs and social services - who are fully vetted, and follow the protocols - which already also includes moderating each other. Perhaps even somehow make it so the kids can't post on it during school hours, and after, perhaps, 10pm? There would of course be a set of standards expectations, or community codes of conduct, like here in the Fedi. Perhaps also running regular fun things too, that get kids thinking creatively (like what happens at the clubs anyway). There are of course many many issues with this idea, and I can't see it actually happening just like that. Not only is there unlikely the right fedi project to accommodate needs, but things like the online safety act potentially blocking the ability to create safe community based social networks for youth. And I'm sure there are many other issues as to why this idea might not work either. Like, what happens when someone turns 16? Are they just kicked off? However, I do know that corporate socials are bad - but not providing good safe alternatives when attempting to protect children, actually makes them more vulnerable and unsafe. We need a way to embrace them, not outcast them.#socialban #socialmedia #fediverse #activitypub #youthwork #onlinesafety

@tofeo take a look at https://gitlab.com/edent/activity-bot/-/blob/main/README_nginx.md?ref_type=headsI don't use nginx, but that should help.
  • An idea.

@jdt one of the first non-social-media uses I've seen for ActivityPub was castling club:https://castling.club/

Hello #Fediverse and Happy New Year!I'd like to mark the start of 2025 with the first message from my self-hosted instance. You may already know me as @_elena@mastodon.social. Well, now I also run my own #ActivityPub microblogging server, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost and #GoToSocial (and #Phanpy, which I'm using to compose this).I registered this domain – aseachange.com – a looooong time ago but never did anything with it. It was the very first domain name I ever bought, even before securing elenarossini.com (!!!). It was so long ago, but I remember I was inspired by Beck's album Sea Change. seachange[dot]com was taken, so I grabbed Aseachange.I absolutely love its meaning of profound transformation and I think it's PERFECT for my self-hosted #Fediverse instance and what it represents: independence, empowerment and digital sovereignty.Ever since setting it up, I've been feeling joyful and hopeful. Everytime I look at myself in the mirror, I think: I'm in control of my own social media platform. And it feels SOOO GOOD.What do I have in store for 2025? I plan to use this account to post messages about #selfhosting, learning #Linux, privacy and digital sovereignty.I will also keep posting from my Mastodon account because you don't give a Lamborghini to someone who just passed their driver's license. I barely know what I'm doing here, so I feel a lot safer (for now) keeping my mastodon.social account as well... In case anything goes wrong here. Better safe than sorry! So, this is my #Introduction and if you've read as far as here I just want to thank the Fediverse for being so amazing and allowing me to connect with people on my own terms. And thank you Fedi people for being so generous and supportive with your superb advice and kind words. This is a really magical, special place.Happy New Year, everyone!
