@made For a mobile OS without google/apple nonsense there is @postmarketOS
I have managed to install it on a 2010 samsung tablet, but not on anything newer because of stupid OEM locking the bootloader. I only had bad luck with the hardware though, because I know there are a lot of devices that are supported and maintained by community members.
That alongside waydroid and you basically have a non-google mobile device with support for android apps, which are sometimes needed for some usecases.@ulquiro @postmarketOS thanks. yes i am keeping an eye on it! I think it would mean sacrificing on banking, since i think waydroid is not enough, but lets see. Having high hopes for it!

What about #/e/OS ?
It's Android #FOSS without any Google services. The advantage is, that you can use most of the Android apps. You can buy already famous devices like #Fairphone etc. preinstalled with #e/OS and more than 200 other devices are supported... where you can install it yourselfe. I use #Fairphone6 with #e/OS since almost 6 month and I am fully happy with it.
@AdnyMcNeil thanks! I am holding back a bit these days on android roms. Since google changed its policies to be a bit more apple like. So the whole install and apk from somewhere seems more restricted?
/e/OS seems nice. But graphene OS also mentioned their update culture.
I dont want to @ grapheneOS here though, since their account is super opinionated and feels accused easily. That leaves a certain taste on that rom too. Otherwise i thought graphene os seems great too! -

I am just craving for a smaller smartphone. Thats why i switched to apple 12 mini last time. But i dont like the apple experience tbh.
Never had so many ads on a phone 😄 -
I still see a lot of people moving away from us services.
It did not affect me. I use Posteo for Mail, Calendar and Contacts! 1€ a month. Tresorit for Cloud drive + cryptomator for extra security on the sensitive data (Dont go for veracrypt, its not made for cloud sync. Had dataloss. Old tech).Nextcloud can serve for calendar, contacts and drive, too.
Only wish i would have, is having a mobile os without google or apple services.

#digitalindependenceday@made maybe GrapheneOS, LineageOS, e/OS

@made maybe GrapheneOS, LineageOS, e/OS
@leobm yes! Had lineage experience before iOS. Its dependence on google micro services was annoying. Without it i wouldnt get notifications, which was actually a bit like digital detox 😅
Therefore graphene os and e/OS/ seemed interesting, but there is still the feeling, that i do not own my device. 😁
I will wait and observe a bit longer. -

#digitalindependenceday@made So many people are waiting for a functional Linux phone. Firefox should drop the AI slop and fix Firefox OS.

@jack @made @toxi It's great but not FOSS, so once again we would be dependent on a single supplier, like we were on IBM, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook and Google. Centralised power corrupts. The lights in the darkness were Unix when it was open, international standards and GNU/Linux. They weren't 'the best' but they were 'good enough' to allow broad cooperation and continuous progress. Greed kills.

Since you were all interested in phone alternatives. Stumbled over this FOSDEM 26 talk https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/ZNAAZX-mainline_kernel_for_fairphones_-_2026_update/
Will keep an eye on it :)
