I told the guy that I couldn’t help him, since I'm not experienced enough with operating systems. He was a bit disappointed, but we said goodbye on friendly terms.

@stefano Reminds me of a person at work insisting that a container contains a full operating system.
So I made it a point at a previous presentation to show that a container can also just contain a single binary and nothing else.

@mvilain @stefano TBF I think one common point of confusion comes from folks who get like Docker Desktop and run it like an app on Mac. by default on Mac if you "run" a Docker image the container runs under a Linux instance running on a VM. For total newbs its hard to make distinction between processes, containers, OS, hypervisors, VMs etc. blurs together. on Windows the UX might be similar. on Linux the Docker impl is much thinner because it doesnt need to add a full VM on top of the host.
Now add the complicating factor that many Linux instances reachable on the Internet may themselves be running on VMs rather than bare metal, etc

lots of newbs think Docker is an OS+VM when in reality its much thinner than that. its the Desktop/non-Linux versions

If I swap out docker for nerdctl, ctr, etc. and later swap out containerd for CRI-O, youki, etc. then is it still Docker OS? 🙂

@mvilain @stefano I was asked an interview question at an interview. Interviewer kept telling me I was explaining it wrong, and told me how it worked. I didn't get the job, obviously
I was a little confused, so when I got home, looked it up to make sure. And one would explain it in the way I explain it if one understands memory management, if one's never had to deal with memory management issues they explain it the way the interviewer explained it
The same when I was explaining how the threading model worked in a higher level programming language, at a different interview. They were convinced that it worked in the way the marketing materials said. Obviously the interviewer had never had to debug and step through the thread manager with a debugger. Didn't get that job either

yeah... the world doesn't need to be able to write low level device drivers in assembly but you should at least have a conceptual understanding of the stuff you use if that's your job.

@datarama @liw I forgot to mention no car! I do have three cats, but they don't cost nearly as much as kids.
It will not surprise you that I am on the spectrum too. My late wife was probably borderline.
It was really freeing to me when I wised up and asked the financial advisor. (And was glad I already had one, courtesy of my credit union.) Heartily recommended if available. Fed him my current assets and amounts of the several pensions I had pending, highballed a guess of how much I'd want to spend per month, he plugged the numbers into a program that made reasonable assumptions about inflation and computed I'd be OK until at least age 90. Likely much longer now.
That leaves the problem of boredom/feeling useful--I enjoy my work and that I am helping people who deserve it. (I work at a university.) But I've developed enough other interests that I ought to be OK, and tested it some years back when I got burned out and took several years off working.
In any case I hope you find a comfortabler solution.

@bagigio @kenobit @la_mosca_2 @Donutsaurus @Zambunny dico pure e chiudo che se la risposta ai problemi giganteschi che l'uso capitalistico dell'AI genera è sempre e solo "io non uso una tecnologia che causa licenziamenti o disastri ambientali" oltre ad essere un po' ipocrita (se è così uno dovrebbe essere conseguente e non comprare alcun prodotto industriale) non fa fare alcun passo in avanti alla discussione. serve solo a vantarsi sui social di quanto si sia fichi e intransigenti perchè non si compra da Amazon, non si usa l'AI, ecc ecc. (questo lo dico in generale, do per scontata la buona fede di chi è in questo thread). e si rimane così sempre e solo ad affrontare un problema collettivo ad un livello di scelta individuale, in questo caso di consumo (o boicottaggio) di questo o quel servizio.

@oclsc @liw No kids, no car, and I've paid off most of my apartment. I could live on a considerably lower wage if necessary; I'm mostly concerned that there won't be any work someone like me can do at all. I'm on the autism spectrum, have severe asthma, and I'm in terrible shape.
