@aral @_elena Fantastic. Just last Wednesday I facilitated a workshop where I claimed that much of what we use now would've been considered "malware" back in the day. Perhaps predictably, I love the points on journalism as clickbait too (I've just included that quote from Axel Springer's lawyer in my website section on "Why Media Activism?"!) Thank you!

@MediaActivist @_elena Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I wish it wasnβt still relevant. But I realised at about that time that talking about this β while important β isnβt enough. Folks would clap me in one breath and the person from Google in the next. Fingers crossed the Small Web will have an impact. Even if it doesnβt, at least itβll exist.

I even started telling people during my talks that they shouldnβt just accept what Iβm saying because I say it confidently and maybe with a modicum of charisma but think about what Iβm saying and what the next person is going to be saying and think critically about all of it, butβ¦ π€·ββοΈ

Like no, there's no secret, universal code to what colours mean in art and literature (although that doesn't mean colour can't be significant). But there are other things that can have meaning. Hell, colour choices can have meaning. It's just not "Red is violence, blue is sadness, yellow is ambiguity" or whatever.

I feel like "the curtains are just blue" is a weird summary of the argument that seemingly mundane choices in fiction carry no meaning, because it's taking like the most dogshit kind of symbolism and acting like that's what all symbolism is like.

The way I write, the curtains usually really are just blue. But that doesn't mean there's no symbolism or deeper meaning at all in seemingly mundane choices I make, it just means I think colour symbolism is generally bullshit.
