@jon I want so much to love this browser: no AI, European, Fediverse-friendly (as in: "it's nice to see you care about here as well"), but... it's so damn hard to root for yet another closed-source chromium-based browser.
Is there any plan to change the chromium-dependency in the future to support a more diverse web ecosystem?

@ed , I think moving away from Chromium is not an option at this time. Having made a browser from scratch before, Opera, I know what it takes to build a browser from scratch and there is a reason companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft have not done it.
I think there is great value in us growing and being able to contribute more to the Chromium project. I think that can make a significant difference.

Not really. At Opera we built a browser with as much as 350 million monthly users. Still we had to deal with compatibility issues as sites would block us. Not least sites by Google, Apple and Microsoft. That is after building the browser core with the best standards support of them all.
It is most natural for us to go with Chromium to ensure compatibility. Making things work with multiple engines is also too time consuming. I think it is best that we put in the resources to influence Chromium in the best possible direction. A Strong Vivaldi can do that.

I guess you have to ask our users, but I believe there are a number of reasons users choose us:
1. Features. Just a lot of useful features. Workspaces, tab stacks, tab tiles and a lot of flexibility in the UI.
2. Privacy. Built in tracker and ad blocker and a stand against the surveillance economy.
3. No integrated AI.
4. No Crypto currencies.
5. Made in Europe. Headquarters in Norway, team and servers in Iceland and developers in Norway and Iceland and a few in other European countries.

I like the browser approach that avoids crypto and AI, everything you described, and the fact that all the infrastructure is in Europe rather than the US. 💪

At Opera we had the largest team of any company engaging with writing the Web standards we all use today. There are some guys working on Chromium today that are former Opera people, but sadly they do not work for us.
We can contribute more and have more of an influence with a larger company. Currently we spend a lot of time just modifying and improving functionality, but we are not getting much of our changes into Chromium. We hope to change that, but first we must grow more.

@stefano on a complety different topic, Time Capsule was based on netbsd(if I remember well). It saved my life, but wasn’t great hardware-wise (mine was dead, I guess that was a dc conversion pb, but never tried to fix the board), and the old sharing technology AFP was not great for over the wlan mounts. The same (dedicated hw with zfs and smb) would rock nowadays.
Oh wait, an Italian guy did write somethin’ on the topic…
true info: I would love apple to get back in the timecaspule/airport technology, simplicity-wise it was great. At this time user experience was the core of Apple. I miss these days.

Xiaomi ha praticamente completato la distribuzione del suo nuovo sistema operativo HyperOS 3, raggiungendo il 95% dei dispositivi supportati, con l`ultima fase prevista entro la fine di febbraio 2026. Partito a fine agosto 2025, questo aggiornamento ha già coperto la stragrande maggioranza dei modelli, lasciando solo alcuni dispositivi entry-level e varianti regionali in attesa della notifica OTA.
Secondo la roadmap interna di Xiaomi, l`intero rollout di HyperOS 3 si chiuderà entro la fine di febbraio, preparando il terreno per l`arrivo di HyperOS 3.1. Il motivo è tecnico e cruciale: le due versioni presentano differenze nella struttura del kernel, che potrebbero causare problemi di gestione delle versioni e compatibilità API se distribuite in parallelo. Xiaomi vuole quindi liberare la banda OTA e ottimizzare l`ambiente di sistema, evitando conflitti che comprometterebbero la stabilità per gli utenti.
Tra i modelli che riceveranno l`ultimo batch di HyperOS 3 spiccano nella serie Xiaomi il fidato 13T, mentre per i Redmi abbiamo il Note 15 Pro 4G, il Redmi 14R, le varianti 5G e 4G del Redmi 15 e del Redmi 15C, oltre al Redmi A4. Non mancano sorprese nella gamma POCO, con il POCO C85 nelle versioni 4G e 5G, il POCO C75 5G, il POCO M7 5G e il POCO M7 Plus. Per i tablet, infine, il Redmi Pad Pro con supporto 5G e il POCO Pad completeranno il quadro. Ricordate che in mercati come Cina e India alcuni di questi potrebbero già aver ricevuto l`update in anticipo, mentre le versioni globali e EEA sono in coda per le prossime settimane.
Già sui top di gamma come Xiaomi 14T e 14 Ultra, la versione stabile di HyperOS 3 è disponibile e rodandosi alla grande, con prestazioni fluide e ottimizzazioni che ne fanno un`evoluzione netta rispetto al passato. Una volta uniformata l`intera lineup su questa base, Xiaomi potrà accelerare su HyperOS 3.1, che promette nuove feature, ritocchi all`interfaccia e un maggiore focus sull`integrazione con ecosistemi esterni. Per chi possiede uno di questi modelli in lista, vale la pena controllare manualmente le impostazioni per anticipare la notifica: l`aggiornamento porta non solo refresh grafici, ma anche miglioramenti nella gestione energetica e nella sicurezza, essenziali per dispositivi di fascia media e bassa che vivono di questi boost software.
In un panorama Android dove gli update tempestivi fanno la differenza, Xiaomi sta dimostrando una strategia aggressiva, superando persino le aspettative iniziali di marzo per concentrarsi sul futuro. Se state valutando un acquisto o un upgrade, questi dettagli vi aiutano a pianificare: HyperOS 3 chiuderà il cerchio, aprendo le porte a 3.1 su un parco macchine solido e pronto per Android 16 sotto il cofano.
