It's great to see more #Linux content aimed at new users. But....y'know what's even cooler? More #FreeBSD content aimed at new users!Just stumbled across this video while looking for other things. I think it does a good job at introducing it as a desktop.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EFG3BO6oVY#tech #desktop #operatingsystem #unix #newbie #computer #pc #awesome

I came across this video which is a good reminder to us. It’s sometimes uncomfortable to ask ourselves the question if we need that new #computer or device. We have forgotten that we used to upgrade when our needs changed. We started to believe the big #tech lie and here we are now. A world of YouTube influencers telling us what to buy even if we don’t need it. Grab a coffee or tea and watch the video anytime you feel like buying new tech. https://youtu.be/eh1vOESSEdQ

@jon @sesav I am an (almost always) happy user of Vivaldi. I work online a lot and intensively, and Vivaldi is incredibly powerful and efficient once you get to grips with it. This browser is actually a complete office suite—and I am still a long way from using **all** the features it offers. And yes—I'm quite adept at AI, but please refrain from adding unsolicited services to my suite of tools. When I utilize AI, it will only be when I initiate it myself. In my opinion, Vivaldi is almost perfect. Except, of course, for scrolling across a vertical tab list. The resulting website tempest is not for epileptics!

As a note, I sometimes help family members set up their new computers. It should be simple, but I am finding it takes hours to remove stuff and it is getting worse.

@ajsadauskas @luca Here's a good article on Hartley Computer: https://ia.acs.org.au/article/2017/acs-heritage-project--chapter-34.html"David Hartley (not to be confused with the British computer scientist of the same name) started his working life in 1966 as a civil engineer with Brisbane City Council. His work later took him to Namibia in southern Africa, where he was introduced to computing while conducting mathematical modelling of rainfall in the vast Okavango river basin, using FORTRAN on an ICT 1500."When he returned to Australia he decided that computing was more interesting than civil engineering. He started Hartley Computer in Brisbane in 1974 to develop software for the accounting profession, on the rationale that accounting could be easily computerised but that many in the profession did not realise that...."The new software was very successful – it was the only software in Australia designed specifically for small accounting practices. Hartley also designed SHEILA (System by Hartley for Entirely Integrated Ledger Accounting) for larger organisations. The venture included building hardware (the Hartley 3900) and an operating system. Both the hardware and the software were very innovative....“The operating system was called RT86, a ‘true pre-emptive multi-user multi-tasking operating system for the 8086 chip. It was launched in 1980, 15 years before Windows PCs had that capability.“Hartley Computer was one of the first mini/PC computer vertical market successes in the world, with ultimately 250 staff and 3,000 sites in seven countries. In the process I became known as ‘the father of computer client accounting’, and we won several awards. The success was killed by hubris and a messy divorce. Big lessons, only partly learned at the time.”

Maybe we need to update #RTFM. Actual manuals are rare beasts these days. You’re more likely to find the information you need online, whether it’s in the form of PDF datasheets, forum posts or Git gists. It should really be RTFAI, in which the AI isn’t what you think but stands for ‘Available Information’. But that’s a bit of a mouthful, so perhaps just RTFI. Or we could just say ‘Read’, followed (if you feel strongly about it) by FFS. RFFS?#tech #technology #maker #computer #computing
