@evan I don't think that major events in other countries that that contributed to immigration are important parts of Canadian history. Like Russian Revolution isn't. It's important to understand the causes on the global scale, but it's not really a part of what happened here.

If you take a course on quantum mechanics, classical mechanics won't be an important part of it — but it'd be referenced and compared to.

You can't just pile everything together — sometimes it's important to focus.

I don't have a strong opinion about the Italy thing, but ..
look up the New Imperial History school of thought which discusses how economic and population forces work at great distances affecting and defining local history in ways which were previously ignored. it's a whole thing.

@carkner @Anibyl I think there are very few Canadian historians who would say that the Battle of Vimy Ridge wasn't an important part of Canadian history even though it happened off Canadian soil.

yes, this kind of stuff gets taught in Canadian history courses. diaspora, imperial trade and migration networks, all that stuff.

@evan No, but… many of its ramifications are so it makes sense to know more about it to know more about Canada.

Could also have answered Yes, but… not in the intuitive sense of “being a part of”, because everything is so interconnected that any major event with global ramifications is a part of the entire worlds history so not sure the definition is very useful colloquially?

Thanks, all. I've been thinking a lot about civic nationalism. It's the idea of a nation that people adhere to ideas and institutions, rather than forming a nation around an ethnic group.
