@lisyarus @ultima12 I was thinking about how to do it while watching your video, and then saw pretty much the same solution on your blog! (Some physicists say that I'm a physicist, but it has been a very long time since I worked in the field.) A big difference between your way of thinking and mine is that I went straight for a cellular automaton model (what are the potential differences across cell boundaries?) instead of starting with calculus-based models and pinning them to the grid.
The potential differences I'm thinking of are just the differences in water column height and elevation because that's what determines the pressure which, in combination with the boundary orientation, gives the forces.
But then you could refine it with momentum, and that might also cover the impression of viscosity.
I wonder whether your people might produce oil to spill? Perhaps they could press it from seeds for cooking, and occasionally knock a cauldron over. The flow of immiscible liquids could be interesting but also annoying to compute and render because of the depths β things look misleading when a tiny mass has to fill a large cell volume. I've been seeing this in Oxygen Not Included, where it has become a broken-physics engineering technique: there is exactly one material per cell, so a milligram of water filling a full cell can hold back a thousand kilograms of oil.
