  • We've looked at absorbance spectra of a bunch of magnatiles but she doesn't quite get all the details I'm trying to explain.

The joys of trying to teach a preschooler physics lol. (Having Paisley's Corner playing in the background was also a bit of a distraction but she insisted)

  • Fine tuning the Lego spectrometer more.

Using a maglite as the source eliminates the need for a separate collimating lens.

I also switched away from the very flaky variable slit made of a sliding brick that wouldn't stay in place if you looked at it wrong.

After some failed experiments with aluminum foil, I discovered that the round tree trunk Duplo brick was a tiny bit smaller than a nominal square 2x2 brick. When placed next to a square brick and locked in place with a plate on top you get a very consistent, repeatable slit that I'd ballpark as somewhere around 200 μm.

  • @staff if it weren't for all the sport bots that jam the feed it'd have been cool to keep seeing it

  • @staff to be fair one can say the same about the Trending feed, in the sense that it features a pretty homogeneous side of Mastodon that focuses on the same subjects over and over (e.g. exclusive focus on U.S. issues, technology, cats when people have other pets or none at all, etc.) and this can discourage people with more varied interests or lived experiences beyond that. We should be encouraging more diversity of interests beyond those things. The Trending feed does not sufficiently do that, despite the lack of an algorithm.

(this is kind of tangential to my earlier point about moderation, but I still feel it is worth mentioning)

  • @untilted We certainly do, but the live feeds on mastodon.social are things posted in the last few seconds, it is essentially a pre-moderation view.

It is neither the best way for newcomers to find their community, nor much use to many established users. If people want to drink straight from the firehose, they can, but we do not recommend it.

@Luanti We'd like to build healthier games without shaking hands with companies involved in the worst things humanity can imagine, and we have to do that without a single help from our government. So, that's it. Thanks to everyone who'd contribute a bit. Link is https://liberapay.com/aes_luanti_server/4/4
