Hashtags look fine to me — similar tags will pop up as you type — just use the most popular or most specific.
Hope you find your people. Follow everyone you see at first, weed them out later.

Welcome, I think you'll love it here. You've been given good advice here already. I esp recommend following lots and lots of people and hashtags to start with. Find someone you are interested in and check out who they're following and also follow their followers. Prune out what doesn't excite you once your feed is well populated. And of course use #AltText to be inclusive and further your connections.
