Is there a way to set recurring tasks (daily, every Wednesday etc) in #NextCloud tasks?

@afewbugs kiiiiiinda. Whatever tasks app on your phone that interfaces with Nextcloud can do recurring ones, I've got some set up for trash and plumbing-related shite using tasks.org on my phone, but bizarrely enough the actual "official" nextcloud thing can read and make sense of recurring tasks but lacks the ability to make them.
It lacks a lotta things honestly! Like, I've got a couple hundred duplicated contacts and a whole thread about the drama surrounding why, and I guess we're getting AI splodge instead

@afewbugs There's one thing that I can somewhat, only a bit, accept as an excuse for talking about NextCloud in particular: It operates on CalDAV Standards and the Tasks part of that ... sucks badly. Like, terrible. I've not been happy with any of CalDAV synced Tasks because not only is support shoddy, but for exactly the reason you give.
However, NextCloud could – as any one of the stakeholders – try to push for something different or find ways to enable this use case better.
Case in point: What do people use for such tasks? Alarms are... hard to manage. Calendar entries are overwhelming. I try paper but I forget too often.

If you build a task manager without the facility to do recurring tasks that tells me a) you're not the one doing the recurring maintenance tasks and b) you either don't recognise the importance of maintenance tasks or you haven't even noticed that they're being done around you to allow you to do the big one off production of a European open source task manager, say.
Come on, it's 2026. Do better men. And it is mostly men.
@afewbugs Funny enough, this is one of the main things I spent time thinking about while working on my task manager. Maybe because I live alone, so all the maintenance falls to me?
...but then I never finished build the task manager, for reasons that become apparent when you consider why I might've been building a task manager

@afewbugs Yeah, I've seen the cycle a lot in transfem spaces and Black spaces and both. Build a space, maintain the space, others come in and complain the space isn't equal enough, burn out and leave the space to build a new one. Rinse repeat.

If any @nextcloud developers happen to be reading this and want a feminist perspective, actually especially if they're reading and don't want a feminist perspective: there are two types of tasks, one off achievement tasks like build a website, write an article, paint a room where once it's done it's done, and recurring maintenance tasks: do the laundry, change the sheets, water the plants.

I do track recurring task in my task manager. But they are not chores.My recurring tasks are of nature where I have to make certain payments every month/quarter, or renew domain every x years etc.
I do the chores daily, and adding them to task manager is more hassle than worth it IMO
(After writing such a long reply, now I'm wondering whether OP meant this as a joke 🤷♂️)

Gawd, the shit I got when I waded into a "discussion" on Instagram about how "men are so helpless and useless and they need to be given a LIST of chores before they will help" and I chimed in: "Actually I have ADHD and if my ex had given me a specific, detailed list instead of just telling me to 'look around and see what needs done' and then getting MAD that I didn't do what HE WANTED DONE maybe I wouldn't have this huge emotional trauma" and it turned into: "YOU'RE JUST ENABLING LAZY MEN AND GIVING THEM EXCUSES, ADHD ISN'T A GOOD EXCUSE, EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW TO CLEAN"… …um, no, not everyone does. And it's really fucking sexist to assume that WOMEN ESPECIALLY are "born with" this knowledge and skill set and little "habit tracker" already programmed in.

@afewbugs As someone who struggles with doing things on a schedule, IMO there's a sub-type of the second - the tasks that need to be done some amount of time after they were *last* done, whether or not that actually matched the schedule. I want to push a button to indicate that the sheets have in fact been changed, and the next reminder should be X weeks after that date, not end up at odds with the calender because they actually got changed 3 days after the reminder and the skew just keeps accumulating. I don't think I've ever seen this option in any scheduling software.

Also this recurring task/meeting/event functionality is *already* standard in Outlook/MS365 for some time.
Its been an open issue since *2017*, apparently 2 weeks ago there is some pull request to add the function still awaiting merging (I don't know how long this process takes before it ends up in the main software, but someone was testing it as recently as 2 days ago)

Therefore you should compare to a client like Thunderbird. There is no problem with recurring taskes generated in Thunderbird. They are syncronized with Nextcloud and other clients. Even the Tasks app for Android is capable generating recurring tasks. It is "just" Nextcloud's web UI which does not support it.

Because if there isn't I am developing a very strong suspicion that NextCloud developers aren't the ones who do the housework in their households
@afewbugs The question is not just the implementation: If you mark a task as done or set the progress, what do you expect with recurring tasks? Reset to zero? Should the already started task be thrown away/removed and started from scratch? How to handle updates of other data?
Just my 50ct. PS: I am considering starting an app that might fit your need but this is a different story. -

@mandarvaze It's not a joke. There are some chores I can't keep track of without reminders, when you can't see whether the thing needs doing or has been done (giving someone meds or taking them yourself for example) is something I find helpful to mark off, or things that don't happen every day (change the sheets every seven days, send the meter reading the first working day of the month)

@ljrk I use Todoist which works really well, but as I'm looking at European alternatives and already use NextCloud for file storage I thought I'd take a look at their task manager
@afewbugs @ljrk my S/O uses Todoist **extensively** and I must say I understand why she picked it. We're both selfhosters and avid FLOSS users, but there's nothing quite like Todoist.
Also: yes, recurring tasks and mental load. As a divorced dad (and single for a long time), +9000 on your original thread and points wrt gender. Life handed me firsthand learning experiences (massive understatement) on that topic.
Also: lists! Tasks and lists!

Also, if it doesn't do what you want, I believe the idea is you can file a bug report on GitHub, and then be told you're doing it all wrong... Or something, cos open source.

I've only really played Pax Pamir 2nd Edition and Pax Renaissance, which are very different games.

Presumably they'd have to replace the blood of a living mouse with a special fluid to preserve the structure?

@cstross "the wiring is the computer" is not too surprising. Years ago playing w/ algorithms for FPGA, needed to invent a bit-string perfect hash table.
