How feasible would it be to port Wine to MS-DOS?DOS already has a well-known port of the GNU tools (DJGPP), and I'd appreciate the ability to run Windows 95 (and later) software on such an austere operating system.Bonus points if it's possible to get better VESA performance than the official Basic Display Adapter drivers.I'm not familiar with C (or derivatives), but there are probably worse places for me to start.#askfedi#retrocomputing#wine

@prokyonid I'm in roughly the same place, and I've found the 6502/6510, specifically the Commodore 64, has the most/best learning resources and tools, by far. And, its small size and consistency (you'll never have to learn about different video or sound cards, every 64 has a VIC-II and a SID) means a human can reasonably learn and reason about the whole machine.I'll try my hand at other CPUs, eventually, but for now the 64 is the right balance of simplicity and well-documented.

News from the #Floppy #Museum! A friend of mine, fusion[1] from #OS2Warez, has written a tiny wrapper for #BBS #door programs so I can run them without needing a full-blown BBS. Combined with rlfossil, a telnet-to-serial-port emulator for DOS (yes, really!), you can now read and write messages in my little forum! Just telnet to floppy.museum on port 8023 - I recommend using #SyncTERM or some other client that implements the IBM 437 codepage, or 850 in a pinch. The experience should be fairly period-correct, something akin to a 1200 baud modem based on my testing. And just a reminder: This is a 286 machine, which also runs a web server, an IRC server, an FTP server and all of the above at the same time. It's not fast, but it gets the job done. Also: Only one node at the moment. If it's busy, try again later! Consider it an early beta, for the moment! :D [1] https://dcclost.com/ #RetroComputing #Why #Patience
