NYC's IRT subway, opened in 1904, is powered by a 600 volt DC third rail running alongside the tracks. Power is fed to the system via a number of substations throughout the city, where high voltage AC is converted to the lower voltage DC used by trains.
Until recently, this was done with electromechanical rotary converters (essentially a combination AC motor and DC generator). They are now supplanted by solid state rectifiers, but a few of the original rotary converters remain operational.

@evan Absolutely. Even if the underlying network protocol is UDP as in QUIC etc, the semantics remain those of HTTP/REST. There's a certain amount of RPC out there but HTTP is still dominant.

In elementary school, one of my classmates was hit by a car on his bicycle. He must have been about 9. His head went through the windshield.
He was fine.
The windshield was not fine. His helmet was not fine. The teacher had him bring in his mangled helmet to show the whole class. Nobody had to tell us he’d be dead if it weren’t for the helmet. It was obvious.
I still remember this vividly 40 years later.
I wear a helmet.
