@aeva I’m sure if you asked the developers they would suggest some simple workarounds, such as moving to New York
@jalefkowit@vmst.io @aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place never will I forget the day where in response to a feature request for being able to adjust how much the volume levels change on a volume up/down event, they said their implementation was correct and people should instead contact their laptop vendors to fix their hardware and/or simply get a different machine
and like my dude even if those were viable solutions, people do not have the same ears. -

oh and specifically it's not just new york that it picks as the default location but Farmingdale new york, which according to wikipedia makes this a very reasonable default for exactly 8,466 people
probably also worth noting: the purpose of the timer was I wanted to eat my lunch and draw a picture within 30 minutes, and because the application contained a timer and an irritating bonus distraction my lunch break ended up being eating my lunch and touching Linux. the idea might come back to me again but I don't remember what I wanted to draw

I needed a basic timer on Linux and so in installed gnome "clocks" via the program "software". This works fine for that purpose, but when you open it it greets you with the time in your "current location". It gives me new york for some reason and I do not live in new york, and my time zone is set as America/Chicago so I don't know how it came to that conclusion. Naturally there is no setting exposed to change this. What.
@aeva ugh, reminds me of the pain every time I want to change the system's time zone on an Ubuntu VM I have set up to test clients in different time zones.
For some reason, instead of listing stuff like EST/EDT, UTC, etc it has a gigantic list of random cities. If I remember right they're not in any particular order either. It's as bizarre as it is frustrating.

@pendell if the location bug were the only thing it wouldn't matter, but it's just one bit of an endless deluge of little issues like this and that is a real problem

@aeva I think it may come down to the biggest flaw in open source software - there is no unifying vision, devs do not really get to align goals with one another, it's just a bunch of people insulated from each other doing their own things and maybe posting in forums and mailing lists about it and arguing with each other.
Then again, Windows hasn't really felt like it has a unified design vision since like... 2000?

@aeva the dice roll in the middle of drowning suggests that it was mere luck that we reached an outcome where you could not tell if the gnome clock was worse. it could have just as well gone the other way, and in fact, had you been slightly more informed, you would have definitely obliterated my little piece of driftwood.

@pendell I disagree, this was a problem that was created by trying to have a unified vision (it's a gnome app using a gnome service and it works fine if you use gnome but i don't use gnome), and if it was designed to function well stand-alone it wouldn't have had this problem and wouldn't have required any broader coordination with anyone else's vision beyond the passive agreement that comes from using standard interfaces

@pendell consensus and community input are important for foundational systems (eg display, audio, network, date time, etc) so that essential functionality is stable and implemented well enough that the rest of the ecosystem can be built on it, but it's not really important whether or not Crazy Bob's Chronometer Bauble fits into some grand brand vision

I'm currently processing my episode with Evo, thank you again Evo. But I'm thinking about what folks said about wanting me to be interviewed for episode 50. I already have people scheduled for the next few weeks, so I don't think it could happen for episode 50. What about episode 100 though? I think I can do that. Who should interview me though? Would Andy Piper be a good fit? I'm also wondering if I should set some kind of goal by the time we get to 100 episodes. Like BT Free gets X amount of donations, or we get X amount of followers. While I don't like those ideas, it's all about self promotion. There's really nothing wrong with them. I'd love to know people's thoughts though.

@yora the sound it makes started out as something written "zz", the ß ligature is sometimes a "sz" (ſz) or an "ss" (ſs) ligature as hundreds of years ago the sound would sometimes be spelled sz or ss depending on its position in the word. it depends on the region of germany whether it's being taught as "eszett" or "scharf-s" to children @eniko @oblomov
