It's important to celebrate that our collective action had an impact.Is this solving the problem entirely? Of course not. And Discord is still a privacy-hostile platform, even without age verification.
But the fact that people got angry, and this made the platform move in a less privacy-hostile direction is a win. And we need to celebrate each win. No matter how small.
It doesn't mean we are leaving the fight. It means we can enjoy this small victory today, then fight even harder tomorrow.

@phillip That is understandable. I can relate with how frustrating this can get. Make sure to recharge around people sharing your privacy values to prevent burnout. Self-care is important in this long battle đ

@Em0nM4stodon it's going to keep happening for this and other platforms if people keep voting for the politicians who are pushing for this kind of surveillance. Discord is only doing this to get ahead of all the new laws that require it.

Oh, you mean delayed? Postponed? Rescheduled?
Even with the qualifier at the end "canceled" lends the act a more permanent connotation than they actually intend.

We can turn this into a hell of a scarry "Hell No" for any company considering this. Bonus points if we set up offramps for the social medias we know will pull this.

@Em0nM4stodon Its a small win. I've been trying to get my friends to move over to Matrix, but its been an uphill battle. I also really hated the "hello fellow privacy enthusiasts" tone of the CTO's blog post.
Not sure if its been brought up, but using the wayback machine it looks like Discord only listed 2 new roles, a privacy engineer and privacy counsel in the past 2 weeks.

@solonovamax @nazokiyoubinbou @Em0nM4stodon Of course, if Discord loses all their userbase like Myspace did, that will warn other platforms not to try this. They try again in six months and get finished off, this will be a very powerful lesson,
Punish one, instruct a hundred.
This outcome would warn commerical platforms that their business model is finished if they do age verification, and since there will be nothing to pay server bills they may as well shut down instead.
That in turn will force them to fight, and put an end to this just like the defeat of SOPA.

@coreysnipes @garretpolk @Em0nM4stodon So far that shit at Speedway is presumably for cigarettes, lottery, and yes, alcohol sold at gas stations in some states.
If one chain expands it to cash purchases of gasoline, their competitors will clean up. There is no push for a law to require showing a drivers license to buy gasoline, possibly because it is also used in things like gas mowers.
