    @pocketvj I've liked Friendica for that purpose so far. Of the various Fedi options I have tried it is closest in functionality. It lets you have granular control of who can see or interact with your posts, lets you organize your contacts, can make long posts if you want of like 200k characters, supports making groups, also has a nice rss feature where you can add rss feeds as if they were a contact so they show up in your timeline and can be easily reshared.Features it has that are better than facebook are: no ads, no algorithm randomly hiding your friends posts, can be self hosted so you control the moderation (no more random post going missing for reasons you cant figure out), can organize your timeline by subject matter in addition to by who's posting (you can create and organize saved filters by keywords and hashtags and other parameters to create multiple kinds of timelines), has an option to pick from different UI styles (there's a green style one that I love, it's so peaceful and relaxing), and ability to bridge to follow and post with people other social networks too, even ones beyond ActivityPub. And my favorite: an optional anti doomscrolling feature, you can choose "pagination" instead of infinite scroll.Differences anddisadvantages: At first your timelines are quiet until you start following more people because there's no Meta force injecting "suggested posts" at you constantly. Timeline may also be more quiet than you're used to because it doesnt have addictive UI tricks to keep people scrolling 24/7 (but if you struggle with addiction this is a benefit. I regained hours of my week back). Because it's built by volunteers the default UI isnt as slick. I recommend going in the display settings and using the "bookface" display option which makes it more close to how facebook looks. It lets you control more stuff than Meta does, and some people get intimidated by having so many settings options. Because it's not an invasive privacy predator, it's slightly harder to just look up people you know, no one is required to use a real name, so I recommend joining with a few other folks you know so you can hang out together as you start off.

    @Sascha thank you Sascha. I used to be stuff like that on my other VPS - which had a Ghost-CLI installation. With YunoHost I don't dare go in the backend to touch anything, lest I disrupt something. I have too many important apps in that installation. I'm not incurring in any extra costs... it's just that a social networking app caches media, avatars and emojis of everyone I follow. I found an old backup from December 2024 when I was only following one account and it was 256 MB! Pruning the list of people I follow - it overlaps with my Mastodon account - may be the way to go 😅​

    I think I have identified a fairly significant flaw in how the #Fediverse currently operates. Hear me out.The Fediverse currently consists of all sorts of different systems - #Mastodon, #Friendica , #Pixelfed , #PeerTube, #BookWyrm , and so forth. And while they are all connected via the #ActivityPub protocol, they all have different functionalities and different ways of presenting themselves. Which is as it should be, because Diversity Is Our Strength(TM).However, it is here that the ActivityPub-based interactivity hits its limits - for usually, you can either experience the relevant system as it was intended, or you can interact with it, but not both - _unless_ you have an account on the same system (though not necessarily on the same instance).Let's say that you are a Mastodon user who looks at another person's BookWyrm page. You scroll through their books, posts, and comments. Then you see some comment you want to comment on yourself, but can you do so?Not directly. You need to figure out the URL of their comment, and then copy and paste that comment into the search bar of your Mastodon instance. Then it will show up in the same format as a Mastodon post, and you can interact with it - boost it, like it, comment on it.Sure, it works, but it's a whole lot of tedious effort.Or you can search for the user account in Mastodon and scroll through all their posts and comments as if they were a Mastodon user - and thus, you will miss out on all the unique user interface features of BookWyrm.So what is missing?Well, Mastodon already has an "Open original page" feature when looking at someone's post. What we need is an "Open original page AND AUTHENTICATE" feature. This way, the target instance (whatever software they are using) could acknowledge the viewer as an external user who could nevertheless fully interact with the local user interface, including the ability to boost, like, and make comments.This is something that should be theoretically possible to implement, right? #FediHelp
