Right now Trump and company are effectively trying to pull a complete grab of power. They've already got so much, but now they're trying to gain complete control over a military and make it white and male, and turning it inward against US residents.
They're also hoping to use this shutdown to take control of other federal departments by purging them of left-leaning staff.
They're trying to grab total dictatorship.
Is there room for hope? Well..

However, I'm not sure I am seeing the pushback we should be seeing to stop this.
And a lot of that is that people just aren't hearing about how bad things are. Information isn't getting it out there, because they've so successfully captured media.

@socketwench It's also just that more of the journalists covering these things are on Bluesky than they are on fedi, so more stuff gets boosted there.
There are a lot of thoughtful takes here though, the flavors are a bit different

@cloudhop honestly, a small military, designed to be equipped for defense, but not really to leave the country, would feel quite a good candidate for the lesser evil in the current climate.
Switzerland has managed to be quite militarized and pretty nonthreatening for decades, and I don't think that's just because their main defense mechanism was really storing the gold reserves for all potential invaders.

@cwebber Yeah...audience difference. I think the most interesting thing was how on BSky a lot of people performatively posted about being from an admin reviled "organization". And here people just kinda rolled their eyes at BSky collectively for it.
With a network's popularity, so does performativity. And a *lot* of USians thing that's the entirety of political engagement. More than one fedi post had better ideas.
