Reading about Godot project import versus runtime loading.

Ideally, I would like to have Godot do the import thing and have it create the resource files AS IF I was importing the files into a project, but save those to a cache or something instead. I am not sure this flow can be achieved.
I think I will just try to do runtime loading of just one type of file (GLB/GLTF - since @queenofsquiggles sent me some code to do that) and then see how I feel about the flow.

But strangely, since I exitted whatsapp and facebook I have never gotten any instances of peeps telling me to login or sending me WA or FB links.
Instagram is the only one I still get a few people who insist on sending me link even though I have (gently) told them (which is true) that I cannot see their content anymore.

Thanks to @critter_in_flux this is working better than I dared hope.
But right now it only works for assets that are already imported in my Godot Project. So now I am going to look into doing some background importing of external assets in order to be able to show them too.
Edit: some assets do not work yet, I would like to be able to play sounds automatically and that does not work now. But shader scripts work! I don't even remember programming that.

The dialog having 3 different is actually great... but for my purposes the one I need will always have items while the other ones will not (I'm guessing they are "favorites" and "recent")

So, Godot Engine's File Dialog control does not expose, AFAIK, the list of items it contains, does not send a signal when an item is not "selected" yet but has been highlighted, and is hard to wrangle its position since it is a dialog after all.
I don't need to replicate all of it's functionality, still it's a PITA...
One other thing, previewing assets works fine if the are in a godot project already but would require importing if they are on an arbitrary external folder. 🥶
