And maybe... (but let's not obsess over the details of how)... Maybe there's countless times I have already traveled back in time...

Maybe I have given my mom as much extra life in some parallel timelines as I have given her happiness or fulfillment in this one.

I trust my other selves have been raised in such a way that, given the choice, they would make the trip.

So I go back, keep my father out of the picture for a while (Business trip and/or fishing trip. This part is super easy, believe me.) And then I disappear.

The family is spared some harsh economic times. My brothers do even better with more care from mom. And my mom gets to live 15 or 30 years more.

I don't know about you, but I would like to think I would make that trip.

You see instead of doing a Marty, and ensure I get to be born. I think...I think I might want to try to do the opposite.

"But afreytes..." TUT TUT remember what I said about leaving your baggage behind.

You see, my folks already had a son and a daughter. If anything, I'm the odd one out. The third child. And I know this put a strain on everyone then.

And I think, maybe not my best thought ever, "What if me not being born means she never gets osteoporosis?"

And so, I have a very concrete idea of events places, people, from the year just before I was born.

I have a pretty accurate idea of what didn't exist back then, compared to how it is now. I feel pretty confident that I could go back in time. And introduce myself into my family's orbit. I wanna do a Back To The Past instead of a Back To The Future if that makes more sense to you.

But I'm not planning to come back...

A time machine, a one way ticket, built for a very specific purpose.

And like I said, never you worry about time paradoxes. Energy requirements, or changung timelines. Time traveling isnt real. So for the purposes of this fantasy it all works out in the end.

Anyway, while my mother has been in the hospital I have been asking her stuff, her mind is still super sharp about the old days. Though maybe her hold on current reality is slipping.

But before we get into it, I need you to do something for me. Drop your baggage at the door.

Because you will want to correct, or point out that, or say "but that cant...", or "actually what would..." And this is just a tiny fantasy in my head, so realism and logic does not fit into it. It's not real, no matter how much I wished it so.

Can you do that? Ok, let's go.

What if I could build a time machine?

    A one way time machine?

PS: I tried to translate the song into a version that rhymes, but it doesn't rhyme in Spanish...

Also, I purposely did not exactly and accurately translate all the verses, because I wanted to test if automated translation engines get them exactly right.

tl;dr : no translation translates everything as it should.

tiny example: reza que reza, which I translated as prayin and prayin, that que in the middle does not mean "what" and most translators will say it does.

@critter_in_flux I will see if I can get that to work, but if it is too messy I will try with ItemList control

Note to self: Having a mental illness does not mean you can act like an asshole without consequence.

Apologizing is just the first of many steps you may need to take. If you cannot take that first step, you cannot complain when others are forced to step in for you.

Had forgotten I was working on something somewhat similar.

The problem with this setup is that I am using Godot's FileDialog control.

It does most of what I want except fire a signal/event when an item is highlighted on the list. Instead I have to double click on each filename if I want to see each asset.

I may have to use the ItemList control instead but that would mean badly replicating what FileDialog already does.

"AgentOrange is sending a hospital ship to Greenland"

    ...sigh...

I remember when they announced the same thing after Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017...

I know people who tried to get help from the ship...
But... I know no one who was helped here by it.

I figure the ship must have great professionals working within it, and I'm not dissing them. But the gesture... My Luigi.

Empty gestures are the same as empty words, maybe even worse.

@ohmu I think, I don't recall having an issue with what they had to change because of licensing, and I had no issue with some of the pop-culture additions.

It was more of, the spirit of the characters in the book don't match or aren't as important as the spirit of the same characters in the movie.

The movie may tell the same story, but somehow it does not have the same weight that it had on the page.

And it could be just as you say, the nostalgia hits different.

@ohmu I adored the book for a hot minute. It's not Shakespeare, or Cervantes, but it doesn't need to be that.

I don't remember now why I was so disappointed (my brain may be protecting itself from the trauma) that I for reals got tears in my eyes. But the movie felt, to me, very very different from the book, to a degree that I thought the people who made the movie had only read summaries of the book.

    Absolutely no one: ...

Me (to myself): Remember when you went to see Ready Player One at the movie theater and it was so bad that you cried silently for a little bit. And then you didn't want to go see any movie in the theater for fears your heart and soul might be broken even further by the commercialization of stories that are dear to you? And then COVID happened and hasn't ended?

    Me: i do. sadly.

Me: well i think we should go to the movies just for the popcorn mothafucka!
