@emilianosandri exactly. and if it's critical data, you can pay someone for helping you to safely store or manage them. It will be cheaper and more secure than "daaa claaaaooouudd"

In the past few days I’ve seen talk about RAM prices shooting up due to demand from big datacenters. -

@tommilata @hradec_kralove No problem! -
Freedom versus convenience.@peteorrall True, but I’m talking to many of my colleagues here. Instead of giving in to the charm of a Docker container on a Kubernetes cluster in the cloud, think carefully about whether it’s really the best choice. And I don’t just mean from a technical point of view.

I had this recent exchange with my wife:@peteorrall this is great!

@radhitya Today it's AI.@radhitya Today it's AI. Yesterday it was Blockchain or cryptocurrencies. Who knows what it will be tomorrow.
Will humanity ever learn that before throwing tons of money at something, it would be worth thoroughly evaluating its pros, cons, and real-world applicability? -

Today I read that a historic brand like Crucial - I own plenty of their hardware, including SSDs - is dropping consumer products to focus on gear for those same datacenters.
The result (or maybe the intention?) is to push people away from self hosting, undermine the OwnYourData idea and make everyone depend on huge datacenters for life.So much for owning your data.
So much for decentralisation.Because taking down one giant datacenter is far easier than taking down thousands or millions of individual nodes.
Friends and colleagues, don’t trade your freedom for a bit of convenience. Once you give it away, getting it back is very hard.
Always Own Your Data.

damnit RustFS do i just git clone and cargo build or what@oxyhyxo so...enjoy the fun 😆

damnit RustFS do i just git clone and cargo build or what@oxyhyxo meanwhile, SeaweedFS provides ready-to-use FreeBSD and OpenBSD (amd64 and arm64) binaries. I've also compiled and used it on illumos and NetBSD.

damnit RustFS do i just git clone and cargo build or what@oxyhyxo I had a look and saw the official building procedure is via docker...

This long day is over@subnetspider not hibernating as I'd freeze 😂

@shlee @oxyhyxo that's a good idea.@shlee @oxyhyxo that's a good idea. I've also set up (easily) a replica of SeaweedFS - a filer connects to the main master and starts replicating the contents. It can have a different database, be it a different OS or datacenter (the BSD Cafe media are replicated into my Raspberry Pi 4 on my desk). It's not a blocking, real time replication but a semi real time one, perfect for a local read only mirror or disaster recovery. It just works.
-
@shlee SeaweedFS seems a worthy contender, with Garage close behind@oxyhyxo @shlee I have written some posts here and this on IT Notes: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/11/06/self-hosting-your-mastodon-media-with-seaweedfs/
I've already shifted away from MinIO ti SeaweedFS and I'm quite happy with it. I'm also curious to test RustFS as I've read good things about it.
