@davidr I don't see how that can be so. It's true of editors and Neovim starters made by people who code a lot more than me. Zed is an incredible editor, super well done in almost every regard. They're clearly excellent programmers who write a lot of code. But, I genuinely can't figure out how you'd write code in an editor with this behavior, so I can't understand how it's the default. It feels like a car that can't turn left, or something.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.Am I simply an alien who uses the computer completely differently than everyone else? I genuinely can't figure out how people use an editor configured this way. How do you not have muscle memory for "tab=indent" if you've used a text editor at all for any reason ever?
-
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Every recent text editor sets up tab as the auto-complete key, by default, and that is simply deranged behavior. And, pretty much all the Neovim plugin starter bundles also do it that way.
How the fuck are you supposed to tab? Guessed completions are wrong 90% of the time, why would I ever want it to be the thing that always happens when I hit "tab"? I've never hated a default key binding more than this one.

It's November, by the way.@therisingtithes.bsky.social there's a Writing Month website that someone here (they're on the fediverse, but I don't remember their name) stood up when the AI nonsense was announced. Not sure "Writing Month" really sings like the old name, though. NaNoWriMo was fun to say. https://writingmonth.org/

Slow Horses is the best.@GeePawHill I keep forgetting that it's based on books. I should check those out, I've really enjoyed the show. Part of it is just that the cast is so great, though, so it's possible the books won't do it for me. Gary Oldman is absolutely brilliant.

Zig is the one, y'all. My particular blend of neurodiversity means bullshit is a major impediment. If I have to do two dozen steps before I can write and run code, I'll never do it. That's why like 90% of the stuff I build is bash or Python or Perl, because I can write them instantly, in-place, wherever I need it to work. Start vim, write the code, run the code, forget the code.

Zig is the one, y'all.Zig is the one, y'all. I've spent the past couple weeks sort of researching and tinkering with options for writing fast, compact, reliable, software in a pretty high level language, preferably without a lot of bullshit (e.g. C++ is a "high bullshit" language...not a bad language, not a language without its benefits, it can produce fast, compact, software, but using it involves a lot of bullshit).
Zig is the lowest bullshit language I think I've ever seen. Less than C, less than Go, even.

hey #FediFriends / #Linux nerds 👋 a few questions for y’all here in 2025…@itgrrl for desktop, it's still Fedora. Still rpm and dnf. I've tried other stuff over the years, but Fedora is the right combination of responsible adult stewardship, good taste both technical and aesthetic, good package selection, up to date packages, and a deep bench of technical talent that makes good choices...e.g. systemd is configured appropriately and correctly. I use the standard Gnome desktop spin.

Messing with old computers always makes me want to make tiny desktop apps.Messing with old computers always makes me want to make tiny desktop apps. Can you imagine programs that do useful stuff measured in kilobytes? 1985 could. They didn't make a computer big enough to load an Electron application until something like a dozen years ago (some might argue they still don't make a computer big enough for Electron applications).

Inexplicably, all three PCjr machines work.I guess I gotta get some way to get more software onto one of these. Looks like it's either jrIDE or a Gotek with HxC firmware...but, since these don't have memory expansion already, it's probably worth going with a more expensive jrIDE for the 1MB memory.
And, since the disk drives actually work, I kinda hate to swap them for a Gotek. I have Racore expansion boxes for a second disk drive slot, but they're all incomplete, missing parts I can't even identify or find references for.

Inexplicably, all three PCjr machines work. This software (intended for children!) is harder to use than vi. I would have hated this. This is the Quick Reference card. I'm 90% certain it would be easier to make something in BASIC than to use this program to do something similar. I certainly used BASIC on the C64 when I was a kid to make similar stuff, anyway, and as an adult who's used computers for four decades, I cannot make anything good happen with it.

And, not only that, the disk drives work, sound works, and the first piece of packaged software I tried (a lovely and weird little thing called Electric Poet), all Just Worked. My best 4:3 monitor seems to be dying, though, so it's not all perfect in the retro room.

Against my better judgement, I'm making a pound cake in the bread machine.Better than store bought, worse than proper homemade. I put the ingredients in in the order of the recipe and should have done it the way all the recipes in my manual for my breadmaker do it, instead. All liquids first, then dry. The mix wasn't quite complete here...so there are some patches of weird texture. But, the edges kinda have that crispy cookie texture I love so much about pound cake, so I'm calling it a win.

Thinking about buying a house?Thinking about buying a house? Consider this... (It is a reasonable price today, but it has six days to go, and it will bring house money when all is said and done. Probably pretty nice house in a decent city money.) https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2016-nissan-gt-r-45th-anniversary-gold-edition-4/

PC GEOS or GeoWorks could run on 8088, right?@jonathankoren but, I recall from reviews at the time that GEOS on PC was allegedly crazy great for low end hardware. Much faster and more responsive than early Windows versions even on faster hardware, and it could run on stuff Windows wouldn't touch (like an 8088). I vaguely even recall it had some kind of multitasking, which Windows and MacOS didn't have at the time.
