What Is The Fediverse?
If you’re not familiar with the name “#Fediverse” – that’s okay. It is is an open society of web services that is already serving millions of people all around the world. They do this through a common language called #ActivityPub that lets news and events flow from one site to the next. So, instead of checking in to 5 or 6 different corporate sites, you can find, follow, like, and share across many, many sources – all from your own, singluar Fediverse profile.

You’re right. There’s already several “starting pages” (though none ever felt exactly right to me)
Still, in an effort to avoid https://xkcd.com/927/ I haven’t added to the list just yet.
My ideal would be a pretty page with a simple value proposition, then one or two “get off my lawn” drop downs (who are you and what do you want?) that forwards you to the sign up page of a single recommended site (like Google’s “I’m feeling lucky”)

@benpate I don't think it would hurt to make another starting page, for the very reason that they all choose a different approach that may work for one audience, but not another.
If you know your crowd, make something just for them!

I still like https://jointhefediverse.net, but it can be a bit overwhelming for someone who just wants to post memes.
And I also wrote https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/a-netizens-guide-to-mastodon-fediverse/, which is a more human-centered way to introduce the fediverse as a community of people.
I think a similar "introduction to the fediverse through memes" is actually a great idea!

Yes. It's a lot like Fediverse Info. But it's still a big page of search criteria that I (as a new user) may not understand.
A start page should boil down to two drop downs: "who are you" and "what are you trying to do?" (I'll try to make a list of the user roles and goals some time soon)
From there, the "start" button should send you to a single server to join, pre-vetted and geolocated near you. Below, it should have an option that says "show me more choices"

Over the weekend, Elon Musk’s X rolled out a feature that had the immediate result of sowing maximum chaos. The update, called “About This Account,” allows people to click on the profile of an X user and see such information as: which country the account was created in, where its user is currently based, and how many times the username has been changed.
Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said the feature was “an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square.” Roughly four hours later, with the update in the wild, Bier sent another post: “I need a drink.”
Almost immediately, “About This Account” stated that many prominent and prolific pro-MAGA accounts, which signaled that they were run by “patriotic” Americans, were based in countries such as Nigeria, Russia, India, and Thailand.
@MAGANationX, an account with almost 400,000 followers and whose bio says it is a “Patriot Voice for We The People,” is based in “Eastern Europe (Non-EU),” according to the feature, and has changed its username five times since the account was made, last year.
On X and Bluesky, users dredged up countless examples of fake or misleading rage-baiting accounts posting aggressive culture-war takes to large audiences. An account called “Maga Nadine” claims to be living in and posting from the United States but is, according to X, based in Morocco. An “America First” account with 67,000 followers is apparently based in Bangladesh. Poetically, the X handle @American is based in Pakistan, according to the feature.
