Hi Mastodon! I'm looking to migrate to a new instance from .social in an effort to strengthen the fediverse (through growing diverse instances) and hopefully build my community here. If you have recommendations for instances currently open to signup that focus on #solarpunk #permaculture #urbanHomesteading #antiCapitalism and the like, I'd love to hear them.
Some folks I follow like @mycrowgirl are on flipping.rocks. I don’t know what main focus of that instance is — just that people I follow there are cool and seen adjacent to your interests.

Have you also considered a regional instance? Those can be nice for having a local feed that's actually local.

Updates: Thanks for so many great suggestions! Regional instances would be great, but I've yet to find any for #SouthernCalifornia / #LosAngeles. If you know any, please tell me!

I know that @ai6yr runs https://m.ai6yr.org/about which says in the about page:

But that's a bit more specific than Southern California and may not apply to you.

@magpieluvseeds I'm on social.coop which has a focus on cooperative organising, has volunteer mods and admins and votes on decision making. It has a $12 monthly membership fee for server space and software costs

@magpieluvseeds I'm on wandering.shop which is SFF writers (which I am, which includes writing solarpunk), so I'll admit I haven't paid much attention to different instances — I figure we're all connected (hopefully) and all have an interest in a better world.
I will say I've got some solarpunk communities outside of masto — I'm one of the mods on Solarpunk Future! discord and we run a solarpunk bookclub as well. You're welcome to join!

There are still so many features that had been introduced there (client-side includes with fallback, “everything is a link”, etc) that are still sorely missing 8-(
I wonder if there was also a growing dislike for XML in general behind this choice? (hurr durr namespace confusing). It's ironic that we have to thank MS for pushing for the little support of XML in browsers we still have (and they are now working on removing 8-/).

IIRC the WHATWG was set up before Google had its own browser (I think it was Mozilla + Opera + Apple at the time?) and it almost made sense, although there was no reason to ditch XHTML 2.0 altogether. What really drives me mad is that EVEN IF one could consider the XEvent and XForms interface to be suboptimal for the kind of “dynamic” web that was being pushed (possibly by Google behind the scenes) that was really no reason to throw away the whole of XHTML 2.
