I'm Cassian, I'm nonbinary (they/them) and I live in Wales. I mostly post about TV I'm watching, surveys I'm interested in, being neurodivergent, environment stuff, things I'm making, and spontaneous grumpy rants of little consequence.
I do the @gendercensus annually.
I first tried the Fediverse over 10 years ago, but didn't really get ensconced until the first wave of Mastodon in 2016.

My top tip for getting into Mastodon is:
1) Make a post that says "hi, I'm interested in..." followed by like 10 hashtags about your interests.
2) Click and follow all the hashtags in your post.
3) People will boost your post and it'll go further because of the hashtags, due to the nature of the fediverse. Follow all the people who boost you; you can unfollow later if it's too many people.

- Free yourself from the pressure of having to have lots of followers or that your worth depends on the reactions of others. Life has more to offer than that!
- Take your time! Find a few people who suit you. -

I am always glad to see a Fediverse influx! I am often surprised that other networks are more popular - of all the places I post, I get the most boosts and replies here. You don't necessarily go viral, but people are genuinely actively engaged and curious and supportive of what you're doing. (Tumblr is in second place!)
Obviously every social network has its issues, I'm not saying Mastodon/the Fediverse is perfect, but in terms of reaching lots of interesting and interested and real people it's unrivalled.
@cassolotl I heard someone say once that on the Fediverse you don't go viral, you go fungal because there is an underground network of interaction that occasionally pops up in surprising ways (perhaps after a rainfall) and I really liked that! :D

@cassolotl I heard someone say once that on the Fediverse you don't go viral, you go fungal because there is an underground network of interaction that occasionally pops up in surprising ways (perhaps after a rainfall) and I really liked that! :D
@Bikil @cassolotl one way to find out how relevant the comparison is, is to get a necroboost (recent boosts of comments or posts made years ago) that suddenly give new life to old posts.

@oblomov @Bikil @cassolotl I've thought about this a bit after getting a response days later to a post I'd completely forgotten about and I think it actually shows at least some people are probably engaging with the Fediverse in a healthier way than people do with social media that's algorithmically optimised for attention capture. I presume people are replying to something I said a few days ago because they're not constantly on here but just came back and saw a reply or something

Genuary 2026 Day 13: "Self portrait"
For this one, I sampled pixels in a photo of myself wearing an Axolotl suit at City Hall. I did this in two runs: one at very low resolution and then another in slightly higher resolution in just the area with me in it.

Provo a parafrasare la tua domanda: magari non puoi fidarti di un venditore senza scrupoli, ma se puoi verificare indipendentemente la qualità di quel che ti vende, dov'è il problema?
(sottotitolo: chissenefrega se qualcun altro ci casca, io me la cavo perché so come fare)
La questione non è solo tecnica e, secondo me, una valutazione che si limita a probabilità e qualità è di parte, anche se in maniera non evidente.

Ricordo che la notte aveva nevicato pure sulla spiaggia del Poetto a Cagliari. Però so di un'altra nevicata eccezionale negli anni 50, non ero ancora nato, credo nella metà del decennio. Mi risulta anche che negli anni 50 (forse concomitante con la nevicata) ci fu un'ondata di gelo che distrusse tutti gli oliveti dell'Italia centrale.
