The data isn't "deleted" if it's possible to "undelete" it 🙄

It's not deleted until you've done,
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/drive-with-data-to-destroyand let it run for about a month.

@the @Em0nM4stodon oh please run that through all the google servers just to be sure. and then shred their ssds ..

Yeah right. -

@Em0nM4stodon But the tuple says "deleted_at: 2026-01-01 23:59:59"!!1!

@Em0nM4stodon
Agreed. But a "reallocate storage space" command or button is less UX friendly. lol@admin @Em0nM4stodon May also say like "Hide", "Archive", or even "Trash"/"Send to the bin" like on desktop computers

@meejah Not naive, but lied to by greedy or lazy organizations and institutions. That's the part we need to fix. The responsibility shouldn't be on the user.
@Em0nM4stodon @meejah This.

Really? Shred? Cool kids use full disk encryption and nuke just the key area should a drive be "wiped".

Even 25 years ago, just "zero" a drive was not considered enough. It would still be possible to recover data through. That's why the military wiping standards at that time required at least 7 cycles of 0x00, 0xff and random data. And then preferably demagnetising the drive.
Later demagnetising equipment became even stronger and got certified for top secret data handling, so just sending the drive through those devices was considered good enough.
All of this was for magnetic storage medium. SSDs and non-volatile storage modules is a completely different beast to tackle.
Deleting data is hard. It's like trying forgetting something you've seen or heard. Computers doesn't make this task easier.

@Em0nM4stodon actually, we regularly hash our whole database and restored your data by bruteforcing the old hash, so… /j

@Em0nM4stodon run a magnet over the hard-drives, that's my advice
this is why it needs to be YOUR computer, its much harder if its someone elses

@considermycat @Em0nM4stodon I think the correct term for AI is data downcycle bin.

@natngs @admin @Em0nM4stodon "Forget" might work too. That implies it can be remembered later.
