Is the Risorgimento an important part of Canadian history?
-
@evan I don't think that major events in other countries that that contributed to immigration are important parts of Canadian history. Like Russian Revolution isn't. It's important to understand the causes on the global scale, but it's not really a part of what happened here.
@Anibyl So, Canadian history is everything that happened inside the current borders of Canada?

@evan Mainly? Otherwise, what's the point of it being Canadian?
If you take a course on quantum mechanics, classical mechanics won't be an important part of it — but it'd be referenced and compared to.
You can't just pile everything together — sometimes it's important to focus.

as a historian I disagree heh.
I don't have a strong opinion about the Italy thing, but ..
look up the New Imperial History school of thought which discusses how economic and population forces work at great distances affecting and defining local history in ways which were previously ignored. it's a whole thing. -

@evan@cosocial.ca I voted yes by pure parochialism. W l'italia! BTW Canadian Corps made a great job during WWII, fighting against nazi at Linea Gotica. -

@evan No, but… many of its ramifications are so it makes sense to know more about it to know more about Canada.
Could also have answered Yes, but… not in the intuitive sense of “being a part of”, because everything is so interconnected that any major event with global ramifications is a part of the entire worlds history so not sure the definition is very useful colloquially?

@evan So an evasive answer would be
“as much as it is part of Brazilian history”

@villasbc could it be both? I mean, the War of the Triple Alliance is part of many countries' history.

Thanks, all. I've been thinking a lot about civic nationalism. It's the idea of a nation that people adhere to ideas and institutions, rather than forming a nation around an ethnic group.

It's closely tied to multiculturalism.

Here in Canada, our standard national framework is based on the imperial aims of two founding cultures, the English and the French, one of which defeated the other but kept it on as a junior partner. Together they dealt with, and then controlled, the indigenous peoples. They strategically invited workers from Europe, South and East Asia, North Africa and the West Indies to join them. Over time, the occupation relationship with indigenous people unravelled and a new one is being made.

One tension in this framework is that all citizens in the nation are treated as equals, but all cultures are not. We have city festivals for Chinese holidays, sure, but that only emphasizes that the other 364 days of the year are for the norm of regular anglophone-francophone things. The other cultures are a treat, not a regular meal.
