  • In my humble opinion, hosting instant messaging is something completely different than ActivityPub - due to the instant aspect of it.

With this, availability is a far more important aspect of it all. Hence the high available setup. Ofcourse, backups are just as important, but it shouldn't cause a full service outage in the unlikely event that one datacenter has a blackout.

You have given me your trust - and I want to do just by all of you. No matter whether you are messaging a family member about dinner or blowing the whistle about injustice.

At the moment in the upcoming two weeks when Exquisite.chat will be taking signups, I will be vocal about it. Thank you all - Exquisite has been such an awesome experience from the very start. And continues to be just that.

  • @bbfnart I have sporadically seen this kind of stuff, usually starting by this or that artist out of personal initiative, and I agree that it's an incredible way of discovering new artists (heck, I remember this even from the old webcomic days when everyone had their own website and this was one of the primary ways in which artists helped each other gain visibility). I guess that here the only way to get something like this started is to do the legwork? Hopefully your call gets heard!

  • Announcing Exquisite.chat

Within the upcoming two weeks, Exquisite.chat will officially be launched. The first iteration will be an XMPP server - in a later phase more services will be added.

It does have a few twists:

Uses a hardened setup, powered by both OpenBSD and HardenedBSD. We have our own STUN/TURN setup so you can talk / video with your beloved ones.No logs, full encryption to benefit your (and our) privacy. It is setup in 'high availability' mode. Served from two different datacenters in the Netherlands (our main datacenter, DC1 in Amsterdam, but now adding Rotterdam to the mix) for increased resiliency. So, no clouds (oh hai us-east-1).And some more details that will follow shortly

Commitin programming crimes }:->Few weeks ago I seriously looked to the mine OpenHAB installation and asked a question for myself: "Am I really need it?" Look, I have a few ZigBee devices, which are connected to the my server with the help of ZigBee2MQTT. Thusly, all necessary values and knobs are accessible through the MQTT topics. And I'm using the OpenHAB (big Java application which eats ton's of RAM and constantly swapping) just to:1) Read values from MQTT topic2) Read weather forecast from Open-Meteo through simple REST API endpoints3) Store all the data to the PostgreSQL DB.4) Display these data in the nice Web page which works only in browsers with JS engine. So, basically, I trade tons of RAM and processing power just for a nice web-page with few indicators. While retrieving data from my ZigBee devices processed by the another service. After that thought, I started to think about replacing this monster with small hand-written program, which will not eat 700 MB of RAM. Just Nginx, small FastCGI script on C, which will read values from DB and display them on the simple HTML page. And another small daemon (also written in C) which will take data from MQTT topic (and from REST API of Open-Meteo) and will write them to the DB. And possibly some PGSQL procedures to analyze these data.At least I'll have fun #programming #C #smarthome #selfhosting

I’ve been using static-web-server to host a local mirror for my machines, and the experience has been excellent. It’s incredibly fast, lightweight, and easy to run and perfect for those times when you just want to serve files without the overhead of a full web server like Apache. To make it even simpler for Slackware users, I wrote the https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/network/static-web-server/?search=static-web-server#slackware #rust #staticwebserver #http
