It is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT and should be shown in media literacy and digital literacy classes everywhere. Actually, everyone should watch it (I'm about to send it to my family and friends).
My favorite part comes up towards the end. Veronica eloquently explains (9 min 27 sec in):
"I feel like we owe it to ourselves and to those who follow us to try and break free of algorithms, which tell us what we should like, who we should believe, and how we should feel about it.
It may sound melodramatic and maybe it is, but I see the increased dependence on algorithmically-driven entertainment as a symptom of that larger problem: uber-convenience that separates us from our critical thinking.
We're learning to abandon reason for small decisions, and wouldn't you know it, now it's easier to ignore reasons for the larger ones.
I'm not here to tell you what to think. I was raised in a "mind-your-own-damn-business" household and that's where my head is at. But I do want to implore all of us to think critically about how streaming media, autoplay, and the algorithm are impacting us."

this is probably my favorite video of Veronica's - even if it's not technically a tutorial. I have already learned so much from her. She speaks so eloquently about the erosion of critical thinking brought forward by algorithmic media.
I was already super motivated to set up Jellyfin... now I'm checking out websites about garage sales in my area, so I can enlarge my music and DVD collection 😊

@DavyJones the title is subject to misunderstanding. if you watch the video you'll soon understand that she's advocating for self-hosted media streaming to escape the algorithm... think: Netflix, Spotify, HBO Max, etc.

I use "streaming" to listen to our local, all-music, public radio station. No algorithm, just a playlist curated by knowledgeable, local people and presented by knowledgeable and engaging, live local people. I stream for convenience since my FM radios don't do Bluetooth earbuds.

@elena @vkc My disappointment with streaming has grown over the years. Recently I decided to limit the streaming and get back to physical media. It felt really anachronistic to walk with a new blu ray player out of an electronic store. I am aquring used and new CDs, Blu Rays both HD and 4k. The collection is growing. I might at some point consider storing it on a hard drive. I find it pleasing to listen to whole album from a CD, the ceremony of selecting a CD and putting it in the player.

@christopher yes consuming « physical » media is amazing. I love the intentionality of it, like Veronica so eloquently says.
I’d love to get into vynils but we don’t have the space in our small city apartment (already overflowing with LEGO)… my father in law has a record player… so maybe there (we go visit every week)

@anton @thezerobit in general, I've prioritized ease of development over long term correctness, and through the benefit of experience I've mostly avoided painting myself into a corner architecturally. This has allowed me to build out all of this in about 7 months. I hired a friend to help out for about four weeks, and in that time he set up a build system and replaced pygame with SDL3 for me.

@anton @thezerobit the thread starts with me hashing out ideas and planning out the semantics I want before diving into prototyping. I went into it with some very specific ideas for using 2D procgen to solve things I find irritating about conventional visual programming languages like wire placement. I still intend to implement some of these ideas, but I've found early on that doing things simplest way possible was quite tolerable, and so my attention has mostly been on the synth pipeline.

@anton @thezerobit I highly recommend using a generic 2D graphics API (SDL3, Cairo, etc) instead of an opinionated toolkit like QT, as visual programming languages tend to follow eccentric interaction and presentation conventions and you don't want to be fighting with your tools every step of the way.

@anton @thezerobit I'm SDL3 for graphics. Specifically I am currently using their basic "renderer" module, not their "GPU" module. I am also planning on switching to using OpenGL ES2 to do the drawing (while retaining SDL3 for window and rendering context creation, input event management, and eventually using their audio API as a fallback audio backend).
I'm not presently using SDL3 for any audio or MIDI functionality, I'm just calling the relevant platform APIs directly at the moment.

@thezerobit I personally enjoy Qt (with C++) -- but I think you knew about this option without my reply. Pros: decent OOP abstractions, cons: Qt is a framework, it is nudging you to program in a specific style.
More relevant: @aeva are working on a visual programing thingy and have a very long thread (tm) about their experience. I think they used SDL for graphics and audio; I will link to the thread in a reply once I look it up -- it has good ideas even if you choose a different route.
