Food firms urge Europe not to ban calling non-meat products ‘sausages’

@afewbugs delightfully Pratchettian! they'll be selling them with labels saying "100% pig products" next.
@astronomerritt @afewbugs Glamorgan tubes inna bun!
-
@astronomerritt "made from 100% dead pig components or dead pig adjacent materials"
@afewbugs @astronomerritt
‘Adjacent’ would include pieces of farmer too, IMHO. 😅 -

@GlasWolf @afewbugs Apparently the ban is driven by such French, who are trying to police languages with less native speakers. Well if French is such an "unprecise" language that french consumers don't understand are they eating meat or plant based items, why don't they just learn a more precise language like finnish and start using that in kitchen instead!
@lepaggoth @afewbugs Given the pride the French have in their cuisine, I suspect a suggestion like this could cause an international incident!
I'm going to guess the famously influential French agriculture lobby do have something to do with this, however.

@GlasWolf @lepaggoth @afewbugs Academy francaise having another tantrum?

@astronomerritt @zipkid "dead pig adjacent materials of high probability mammalian origin"

"A ban would mean, for example, bean burgers sold in Europe having to be relabelled as “patties” or “discs”, while the Welsh breakfast staple Glamorgan sausages – made of cheese and leeks – would probably become Glamorgan “tubes”."
@afewbugs @Nickiquote Fish fingers?

@afewbugs @Nickiquote Black pudding.

@afewbugs @BenCotterill The finger and dick industries have less of a lobbying presence at an EU level, so those aren’t protected.

@Nickiquote @afewbugs I’m going to have to check finger and dick protection under EU law.

@BenCotterill @afewbugs They’re mainly health and safety rules about not putting them in places they’re not designed for, particularly appliances.

@Nickiquote @afewbugs There is now a record on a server somewhere indicating that I typed “EU law penis” into a search engine.

@GlasWolf @afewbugs ...well, they should have given a thought to pride many people have in their native languages, before coming to tell how they want this and that word from other languages banned because the french don't understand them. Would serve them right if french agriculture lobby resulted only making things harder for french cuisine folks, just because their suggestion was so inherently stupid.

@afewbugs also Oatly losing a court case around the use of the word ‘milk’ recently, because it might be confusing.
Soy milk has been common for decades, anyone who’s confused by the concept has only themselves to blame.

@benjamineskola @afewbugs honestly. Courts assuming everyone is an uneducated twit. What about 'meat'? The contents of a nut shell is the nutmeat https://www.dictionary.com/browse/nutmeat

@benjamineskola @afewbugs maybe nut milk sellers should deliberately name the product 'nutmeat juice' out of spite
