May 2026 be the year I get into #FreeBSD.
My last #mysocalledsudolife action of 2025 is... downloading the FreeBSD handbook.
I was about to print it at my in-laws' but I'm not sure my father-in-law would appreciate the consumption of 935 sheets of paper. I also don't want to sacrifice a tree for it. So off it goes to my iPad 🤪
Wishing everyone a great day!

@elena I went FreeBSD -> Debian -> Ubuntu -> Debian again -> Arch (CachyOS mainly).
For me, it’s the typical “more than the destination, enjoy the ride”. 😁 -

I also appreciate the fact that in December 2025 I understand what that means (I would not have heard of these terms or known what they meant as recently as December 2024)

@elena May 2026 is a month, not a year.
😉
I'm sorry, Elena, I couldn't resist!
Have a good and healthy year 2026, and enjoy getting to know FreeBSD. Also, if you've an extra bit of time, OpenBSD might likewise be something you'd enjoy!

@jpmens haha thank you JP! Considering all the self-hosting I managed to achieve in a month (original goal: 4 years) maybe I can get a grasp of FreeBSD sooner than later... maybe by end of April 2026 😉

@elena sounds good, then you could travel to Brussels in September for EuroBSDcon https://2026.eurobsdcon.org and give a talk on your experience learning FreeBSD.
I could well imagine such a talk being accepted, but I'm not on the comittee.

@jpmens @elena We certainly welcome submissions from people who have not been to our conferences before, and there is no requirement to be the "internet greybeard" type.
So while I can no guarantee acceptance (and my vote would be only one of 7 or 8 IIRC), I would definitely encourage you to submit any time while the call for papers is open (https://2026.eurobsdcon.org/ has the details such as they are).
